How many people here have or have ever had experience using a 700R4 behind a big block chevy? Im currently starting an engine build and I have heard from nearly everyone that a 700R4 will not last behind these torque monsters. "Even if they are built to handle it its a ticking time bomb". The engine will have around 425-450hp and around 500-525 lbs-ft. I have a 27 spline early 700R4 sitting behind my garage that I would like to get rebuilt to handle the abuse from the 468 im building but right now im wondering is it even worth it? Any input is appreciated.

This is a really informative read. It mentions the 700r4, but mostly covers the 2004r. Interesting either way.

Re: 700R4 behind 468

Thats a good link Wile E.

For my 570 TQ 509 I chose a well built billet front drum shaft 200-4R. I would either use a billet shaft 200-4R or 4l80E. The 700R4 is too weak and has to low of first gear for a rowdy BB IMO. I used the 200-4R for almost 9,000 hard miles without fail but it was probably do for a refresh. With 275/60/15 drag radials, posi, lower control arms, & air bag, I could still mat it at 25 mph & light up the tires yet shift nice at part throttle. I have also had great luck with the 200-4R in my GN.

http://extremeautomatics.com/transmissions/2004r.html I think you would be well served with his Stage 1 plus the $275 billet input shaft which anything behind 500+ TQ needs in a 200-4R. You end up with $1,800. He charges $1895 for the stronger 4l80E but you need a basic controller which Jegs etc sell for $700 and I don't know how that fits our cars plus driveshaft etc where as the 200-4R came in them. The 4l80E also takes more power and fuel just to operate and doesn't have quite the OD ratio.

http://www.ckperformance.com is another great 200-4R builder.

Just saw your link... Another wealth of info on the 200-4r's... Thanks for sharing... Makes me glad to have my OZ trans just installed! Gonna see how it runs as is, & plan a rebuild or a new one in the future!

Re: 700R4 behind 468

This debate has been going on for years..The old 2004r vs the 700r4, I can tell you that both of them can handle a bunch of power...So long as they are built right. I have a sbc that has been dynoed to 514 hp at 6800 rom, 470 ft lbs of tq at 4000 rpm's and I have a 700r4..It was built with all the right parts and has a 3200 non lock-up converter.....I have about $1500 in this transmission and it handles the power fine.....I might also add that I'm on the 700r4 band wagon, prolly cuz that's what I have...but I will say that the "General" used the 700r4 in the police package chevrolet vehicles and that's good enough for me. Just preference is all.....Check out CKPerformance.com for 700r4 and even 2004r kits.... I have their valve body in mine 8)

Re: 700R4 behind 468

Hey JBreu, I agree 100%. Either trans can be built to handle power. I'm sure I would have been happy with the 700r4, and the 700r4 seems to have more aftermarket support + R&D. Had a 700r4 in a S-10. However I picked the 2004r for my combo after seeing the success Art Carr and the GN guys have had with them.

Re: 700R4 behind 468

I'm not running a big block but my boosted small block makes over 500 lb-tq and my 700r4 from bowtieoverdrives has been working fine for years now. I wouldn't bother with the 27 spline version though, i'd start with a 30 spline then get all the goodies for it. There was a lot of small but significant changes over the years, so get the newest one you can find.
