I am going to have my tansmission rebuilt in my 87 el camino. I will be going to a 350 engine maybe a 383 not real sure yet. My transmission shop doesn't want to rebuild the 200 r4 that's in it but to put a 700 r4 in. I want to stay with the over drive. What are the suggestions from the forum?
Thanks

700r4 is overdrive. Cheaper/easier? to build for power, but has a gap at the 2-3 shift I think.
I've had this issue with a trans shop before. Just flat out refused to build a 200 for power. Not smart enough to do it right I guess?

Anyways, the 700 IS an overdrive, that's why they want to do that for you.

both trans have OD but go to a different transmission shop anyways.
700r4 maybe a bit cheaper as they manufactured in greater numbers than the 200r4 but that's no reason to tell you they won't rebuild your 200r4.

Run, don't walk from that transmission shop!

If you browse this forum a bit, you'll see that a lot of people actually prefer the 200R4 to the 700R4. The 200R4, properly built, can withstand huge amounts of HP & torque, plus it does have better ratio spacing between gears than the 700R4. Why a shop would recommend doing a different transmission & having to mess with crossmember location (IIRC) & driveshaft length issues, is beyond me. Unless they're going to nickel & dime you to death & have you out the door for $3,500 by the time they're done building & installing the 700R4. Sounds like they're either lazy, incompetent, or crooked, and maybe even more than one of those! Maybe all of them!!

Post your location & maybe someone on here will have a local recommended trans shop for you. If not, try to seek out some local hot rod folks or racers that can point you to a good trans builder. If you are willing to do the install, someone on here posted the name of a builder that can ship you a fully built trans for a reasonable amount.

I will say tho that your transmission shop should be commended for not rebuilding the 200 4r if they aren't familiar with that transmission. Many shops will just rebuild it and hope for the best and if it doesn't work out they'll usually find a way to get out of it.
