Im in the process of swapping my chevy v6 to chevy 305 with a 700r transmission from a 81 caprice. Ive gotten the 305 motor and transmission in the car but I have ran into a few problems. My 81 MC has a floor shift of course it has the cable running to a bracket mounted on the transmission pan. I tried to swap the bracket to the 700r and the holes wouldnt match. Do I have to swap my steering column with a column shift???

Now that I have connected the rod that goes to the steering column the transmission lever will not switch between gears if the long rod is disconnected the transmission lever can go thru all gears... do i need another steering column because of this also

what was the old trans?

You have to modify the bracket to fit the 700 pan bolts.

Do you have any pics of a modified bracket??

Also what will I have to do to get my exhaust welded up. the motor still has the manifolds on it. but i broke one stud while installing the motor. Will i have to get headers or can exhaust shops make a crossover pipes? Also I see alot of headers on ebay for a 81 monte carlo...will any headers work or they easy to install??? will i have to unbolt or tilt the motor

Keep the floor shifter!

My linkage rod for the column shifter had to be twisted a bit so it would not bind when I went to a 700.
IDK what your bracket for the floor shift cable looks like, but it should be easy to find a way to attach it to the trans.

Pics would help

update: im just about finished with the motor swap. now im having issues with the drive shaft. the drive shaft that came out of my car is too long. and the drive shaft that came out of the caprice is even longer. what are my options can i buy a drive shaft anywhere that will fit

Assuming you had the th-350 in there originally , you will need to have the original shaft cut 3". You need 49.5" from center of U-Joint to center of U-Joint. YOu might want to get an aftermarket shifter with a new cable as well......I did the 700r4 swap last year and I used my existing B and M Pro Stick.. All I had to do was get a different gate plate is all. Hope this helps....You'll love the O/D 8)

thanks im going to check around tomorrow to see who will cut and balance the shaft. i hope the measurement are dead on. Everything has been a breeze until now. also are there any throttle and tv brackets that will fit my original throttle cable and tv line. i tried the throttle bracket from autozone it almost worked but not quite. the engine has the stock 4bbl intake and a non computer quadrajet 4bbl carb. right now i have the cables rigged but it will do until i find something that bolts like stock

Thanks JBreu you were right on the money.Thnks again
d
Can yall tell me how can i make a brake booster line or can i buy an after market line that screws to the back of my carb
