1986 monte carlo ss

hey guy i just picked up a monte ss out of a feild it has no body rust and some tweck started ripen at the motor. so im thinking a 350 small block swap. dose any one have any ideas on how difficlt that is

Well... if it's an "SS" then it's a 305 originally, and a 350 is a direct bolt-in swap. There's some minor variations that you might run into depending on year model of the engine, but nothing that would make life difficult.

The stocker is probably a th350 and will deffinitely hold. Unless you are gonna build the crap out of the motor. I think a stock th350 will hold up to around 550 hp and 600 tq. Someone correct me if wrong. They are pretty sweet trans even at stock level. A th400 is yhe mac daddy though. I think also gm made one in between those. A th375. It has the inardsof a 400 but is smalle than one. Just some onfo.

I doubt a stock th350 would last with this much power (depending on how you drive it), my vote is that it would last in stock form closer to 350-400 tq.

The early SS came with a the TH-350, the later ones the TH-200 4R. The 350 is a 3 speed, the 200 a 4 speed with overdrive. Either way, a 350 is a bolt in replacement for a 305, as is any :262, 265,267,283,302,305,307,327,350,or 400 SBC.

since it's an 86, if it's an SS it should be a 200-4r, if not it could be a 350 (not likely) or a th200. the 200-4r is a good trans but it does need some upgrades if you're putting real power to it. the th200 is a piece of sh*t. a stock th350 will take slightly more power than a stock 200-4r. plus the overdrive of the -4r helps on the highway.

thanks for all the help

well its an auto so im hoppen its a th350 how can i tell and if it is that should hold till a bild the motor im thinken a 350 small block with a little work im thinken close to 400 hp im hopen o one other question i here the 86ss is a good car for drag whats ur opinion?

the 350 is a 3spd the 200-4r a 4spd. monte's can easily perform on the drag strip.

The SS with the 3 speed auto came with a 3.42 rear gear. The 4 speed 200-R4's came with a 3.73 rear gear. Posi was an option on either. If it has the 4 speed auto you'll get better performance from it do to 1st gear ratio. Plus, you'll get better MPG's due to the overdrive.

The non-SS Monte's could also get the 4 speed overdrive option but the rear gears were usually in the 2.4-2.70 range. Not sure if you could even get a 3.42 or 3.73 in a non-SS.
