I have a 86 Monte Carlo LS and I have installed a 5.7 Vortec out of a 96 Chevrolet pickup and I am having a problem with the power steering pulley too close to the steering gear box, and AC Compressor clearance from hood. I do not want to install a cowl hood. Will I have to replace Exhaust manifold? If so, what headers will I need? I have already installed the electric fuel pump and I plan re-work the wire harness. Also, is there a bracket kit to help reposition the throttle cable?

most people do newer motor set ups, so i will have to look into this... all of the 4.8/5.3/6.0/6.2 stuff is fairly easy to adapt...

for example (with the 4.8-6.0), you would use the trans dapt 1" set back engine plates, to help clear the steering box... what made you go with that motor?

12/12 position is correct at #1 TDC. When installing the timing chain, the 6/12 position is used since it's easier to line it up correctly that way... once installed, you rotate it to 12/12 to install the distributor, etc.

Always a good idea to change the timing chain when you have it torn down to that level, but I'm not so sure that's your problem. Need more info.

The engine he installed is not a LS based engine, the truck 5.7 vortec he has installed is a standard small block chevy with a strange kind of fuel injection.

are you using the factory fuel injection on this engine for your monte carlo?? if you are i have never seen a bracket designed to move the factory throttle cable. you have to remember this engine was not designed for a car, it was only in the pickups, suv's and the full size vans up until 2002, so they didnt really need to be concerned with fitting under a stock hood, or not having room to fit in the engine bay. My 96 Tahoe has the same engine you installed, and there is a lot of room to work on the engine in that engine bay, you just have to jump up over the fender to access it

that was the point of my post, thus followed up with the info he needed in my next post

the 95 was not a "Vortec" named engine it was a 350 with throttle body injection and the entire front accessory drive is different than the "Vortec" ones also

96 setup is different indeed you may need to do some mods to get it to work. i have a 91 silverado setup with all the truck brackets and they work find. only thing nice about the 96 motors is they have the better a/c compressor....

I know the 95 was not a vortec engine but as far as I know the 5.7 vortec block is no different than a non vortec 5.7 in the front of the block. I do have vortec heads on it and I was just giving another option for the serpentine set up that fits a G body
