7.5 rear suggestions

Have you checked the rear? Is it Gv lock or Clutch style? If it's a clutch style, then repairomg your's is a ton cheaper and easier.

Oldish thread, I know, but I'm considering beefing up my 7.5 with a stud girdle from TA Performance, 28 spline axles, auburn posi and 3.42 gears for my series 2 carrier along with all the needed seals and what not. Rear only has 89,000 miles on it, never given me a problem. I'd just like to do two wheel burnouts and get out of the hole better is all. Plus its rusty and ugly and I think it'd look killer with the aluminum girdle and satin black with new brake lines. So, should I? As others have said I would like to keep my car all GM and all other rear ends are out of my price range and the local ones are all Monte SS 7.625 (or whatever it is) or old mangled 12 bolts that would need rebuilt anyway. I may never even crack 400hp with this engine, so I should be good right? I may end up running with DOT slicks or drag radials in the future. Would it hold up? I may add some gusseting from the center section to the axle tubes to strengthen the case as a whole. What say you guys?

Have you added the parts cost up you mentioned? A 8.5 or 8.8 Ford is your best bet, but not cheep.

If my math is right it's at least 1800 dollars. All the ford 8.8s and 9 inches setup to what I want are 2500 bucks.

for less than $1,800 you can get a 12 bolt set in your car, the stock 8.2" I have is good for up to 500 hp and it cost me around $1,000 canadian for the rear end and UMI control arms

I know you need different control arms (such as the UMI as you said) with heim joints, but are there any other fitment issues? And its 68-72 Chevelle/malibu only 12 bolts right?

I have a 67 rear which is 2.5" wider than a G body rear, I need the UMI conversions uppers and UMI lowers with a Roto Joint. The 68 to 72 is 4.5" wider than a G body rear end and you need the conversion uppers. The 10 bolt and 12 bolt rear ends were the same width.

Cool thanks. If I can get a hold of a 12 bolt next spring (too late in the year here to really do any work, and I have no garage) for cheap I'll go that route. What's so bad about the 7.5 anyway? I know in stock form they aren't particularly the best, but with the stuff I may do to it I think it should hold up to my shenanigans. Gusseting, rear end girdle, posi, gears, 28 spline axles, etc. I think that'd be enough for upto 400hp, right?

the 28 spline axles are a good upgrade but I would go with a locker over the posi carrier. The two pinion gears in the 7.5 posi carrier are small and weak.
