72 Beetle project

Spent my rainy Saturday finishing up stripping the parts car. Even the radio was rusted. My friend is picking up the carcass Monday am to take it to the scrapyard for me. I figured I’d cover it a bit so the neighbors don’t get upset. Time to put this stuff away and jump on the GP.

Was this hulk of yours, by chance or circumstance, a beach car? Cause a rusted radio is passing strange, unless it was driven in the rain or snow.

The car was sitting in a field and taken by the guy I bought from. He was going to make a bar out of the front. It was on marketplace for $150, 10 minutes from my job so I grabbed it. The nose and rear decklid were good, everything else was shot. Definitely one of the rustiest cars I’ve worked on. I had to strap the body to the wheels so it didn’t fly off.

Had a small rust hole, so I decided to investigate. I knew what I would fine, and I confirmed it. The foam filled c pillar was soaked, and rusted. I’ll probably just cut both sides out and cover them with gorilla tape until I’m ready . I’m most likely going to finish it later though.

Can you use compressed air to spray some kind of rust inhibitor into the cavity to slow things down until you are ready for surgery?

I have some Eastwood chassis rust converter, but that’s a little waxy. I think as long as I get the wet foam out it’ll be good enough for now. It’s already pretty bad though. So I’ll probably wind up cutting larger anyway.
 
So apparently the area above the drip rail is also filled with foam, and will have to be cut out. I was thinking I’d have to fab up my own panels, or god forbid buy them. Then I took a look at the doors I got from the convertible and the original deck lid from this car, I’m all set. Lucky for me the guy that was going to buy the doors flaked out on me after at least 20 messages and 3 phone calls.
Right now I’m in limbo with shuffling cars, so I have to resist the urge to mess with this car. I don’t want to touch my Malibu, as it’s a runner, and I have no side jobs at the moment. You know what they say about idle hands.

These cars seem to rust in the same unusual places. In my old '73 Super beetle, I also cut out and welded in a piece in that same C-pillar/ roof area by the rear window. Also noticed the foam inside the body panel.

To do the pans, heater channels, and rear apron I’m looking at $1000. The rest of the body, minuet the spots I just uncovered, isn’t bad, or I have from the other car.
