78 cutlass W-31 build

Lot's of good news guy's my brother came up with some parts not good enough for his cars (he's all about correct numbers) anyway I put a starter for a 69 BBO in it and that fixed my cranking problem. Replaced the clutch fan with a 6 blade for a 70 455 that was nice and tight. Then we started playing with it the longer it ran the less it taped.gave it 15° at idle yea it idles! 24 at full advanced. Carberetor is still not right fluttering and stuttering a bit and the vacuum port for the distributor seems to have vacuum all the time ????? My neighbor Steve kept the radiator full manning the garden hose wile my brother and I played with timing and carb. We finished the break in and it held together sounds nice out the exaust as far as tone but the carb is killing it for now it will work until I can send it out Tony uses a place right here in Jersey for his restoration carbs I may send it there when I get some more money. For now I'm going to work out the bugs on some other things. Fix the radiator, bleed the brakes, figure out how the vacuum lines go jus get it all working so I can take it up the street and see if it shifts (remember the transmission ordeal) I'm looking forward to not leaning over the fenders as much after doing body work all day but tonight was a good night I'm finally eating dinner and I want to make some ceviche tonight I got like 6 pounds of fresh caught yellow tail for free so I'll eat good tomorrow!

Thanks for your encouragement and support guy's this has been a rough road to hoe!

Awesome to hear Eric!!!! I know that engine has had you wanting to take the Cutlass and roll it off the pier, but you've shown some true perserverance man!!!!

Keep at it, and you'll be driving that sucker before ya know it!
Thanks I'd still rather be doing my crew cab or my 87 Cutlass but it's going to be nice driving this one to get ice cream with the kids

Awesome!!

I think the tap may be a worn rocker bridge
That's a very good possibility. Ticking is what those things do. When I did an engine compartment resto on an 84 cutlass in the mid 90's it had that ticking and I replaced all the bridges and rockers. The stock stuff was cheap. It quieted it down.

I kinda took the night off but I did start it and it ran like crap! So I called Custom Rebuilt Carburetors in Middlesex New Jersey and if I drop it off there Saturday with all the engine specks he can have it back to me built for my motor in 3 days so I think I'm going to go for it he did the carbs on 3 of my brothers 442s and they're flawless

Add at least 5 degrees more timing. I find the bridges very finicky, sometimes flipping them around fixes the play. I find the factory all aluminum bridges work better than the steel aluminum two piece. I have also seen worn rockers cause issues.
