78 Grand Prix project

An 80gal 2 stage should be plenty for home projects. I guess it really all depends on cfm requirements, but I'd think that a die grinder would require more than a blasting gun.

Great build thread, I just read the whole thing. I'm looking forwrard to seeing the 455 updates! I was going to say, it's funny how everything is turning powder coated. 🙂 Keep up the good work.

Thanks! It's turning into a book at 28 pages huh? I really want to go hard at finishing the 455, but at the same time I have my eye on a few 8.5" rear ends I really want. We all know how often those pop up.

I guess I am going nuts with the powdercoating but I enjoy doing it and the finish is outstanding compared to paint. On another note, I've thrown so many cars together in the past with rattle-can jobs that I want this one to be a little nicer.

I see you're in Chicago too. If you ever need any help with anything send me a PM. I'm right behind Midway but it seems like everyone else I know lives on the north side. I don't have a lot of geahead buddies and I eat, sleep & breath this car sh*t

Sounds good, thank you, and likewise if you need any help. I'm right by where 290 and 294 meet, maybe 20 minutes away, or two hours during rush hour ha ha.

I was just kidding on the powdercoating, I totally get how you can find new ways of doing things, and they're so much better than the old ways, you can't really help yourself. I came up with this little trick for detailing hardware, nuts, bolts, screws, it makes them look better than new and it lasts. So now every dirty little piece of hardware that comes off a car ends up going through this whole process ha ha.

I'll keep you in mind. I have a ton of leads on BOP big blocks too if that's of interest to you.

You know, it would be hard for me to turn down the right deal on any big block, whether I needed it at the time or not ha ha. Right now I'm scrounging up money for an 8.5, but after that, anything goes. 🙂

My dilemma on the 8.5" is whether I want to fork over a grand for one with a posi & 3.42, or get one at half the price w/o posi and a 3.73.....decisions, decisions! Either way, tax returns and 8.5" rear ends don't come along too often.

rear ends are getting expensive it seems...I paid $600 for an 8.2 posi rear end out of a 67 chevelle and there are adds out there with guys looking for my rear end willing pay twice what I paid.....$1234 - WANTED: 8.2 GM 10 bolt posi rear end for 64 chevelle. Gbodyparts sells used rear ends and they go for $950 for the posi and they come with iron drums.

Yeah the prices on everything are through the roof right now. Blame cash for clunkers, the economy and unemployment for that. It's becoming difficult to even find a half decent old car for under $2k anymore. On that note, it's time to buy beer and propane for the garage heater.

Cheers!

That's a bit of a predicament...isn't it always with 8.5s? Unless you'd be setting up the axle yourself, I'd say go with the 3.42s, they won't suck with a 455 and you're set after the initial outlay. I'd been planning on having 3.08s set up, assuming I would find something like a 3.73 open. When I found a 3.42 posi for a really good price, I just decided to go that route. Livable now, and the gears can always be changed later if necessary.

Edit: I'm running a TH350
