Maybe the thing was oil starved at one point, being a former hydraulic car?
That or as mentioned the piston to wall clearance was way too tight and when things warmed up (or cooled down), they rubbed. 307 is a fine motor... but so is a mild 350 olds... all accessories fit. idk florida emissions laws, best to check up on there first. A 307 can be built like any other engine, but automatically with the 350 that extra 50 cubic inches (more or less when bored) gives you that extra little bit of oomph.

I would think there are probably performance aluminum heads and hotter cams for the 307. Sure, it might not be a dragstrip monster, but should be plenty for a street car. Shoot, I’m puttering around with a 231 2-bbl V-6. You want to talk about gutless!
No, the aluminum heads available are designed for the BBO. The 307's 3.800" bore is too small for the 2.07/1.71 valves. They will work on the big bore Olds 350 and 403. There are many flat tappet and roller cams available but unless custom pistons or the heads are milled, you are left with around 8 to 1 compression which means staying small on the cam. That is another reason I suggested milling the block again. Those pistons didn't look too far in the hole but they the block may have already been milled a bunch. The closer to 0 deck, the better.

Soooo im definitely no mechanic but this doesnt look good to me!!

Cam Bearings 1,2, and 3 are hanging out the back side and 2 is cracked. Probably done during install/build and not noticed

I see the main problem....ain't got no crank or pistons in it!

Ok, just jokin'. I have to admit, I've never seen that sort of issue before. Always a first time.

I have been bit by the loose flexplate bug twice now. Took me 2 times to come to my senses and put the dowel in the end of the crank for the flex plate. No idea if Olds is the same way. On mine I could lay under the car and with both hands move the flexplate on the crank ever so slightly. Usually when that happens the holes turn into ovals and its time for a new flex plate.

Also when mine happened, the noise went away if I revved the engine up. Food for thought
What was the easiest way to replace the flexplate? I'm about to do mine .had this happen lastnight so I order a new flex

Depends on engine and transmission. WIth my big block chevy and turbo 400 transmission I had to slide the entire transmission and torque converter back in order to do it.

Like I said though, if you don't have a roll pin or a dowel of some sort in the end of the crank shaft then you really should install one.
