Opposite. Stainless on mild steel. Steel on aluminum. It takes two different types of metal, then the weaker metal corroded from the contact when exposed to a conductive solution (water with road salt?)

Now, if you fastened two pieces of stainless with plain steel hardware, that plain hardware would be in for issues..

I guess I'm thinking along the lines of put a stainless nut on a stainless bolt and they weld themselves together. Stick a mild nut on the stainless bolt and gtg.

That's like metals galling up and that happens if the threads are wrecked. If everything is clean and right stainless on stainless is good to go, done thousands of them at work.

Are the nuts and bolts the same or different grade of stainless? I'm not the only one who's ran into this. I encountered it on a header I had, zero salt or corrosion involed, thing was bolted on for all of a couple of months and galled its way right back out of the hole. Was told to use mild fasteners and didn't have a problem after that.

All is 316 for Marine use.

I don't think Flex Seal or any kind of "FLEX products" is a good idea I would use seam seal just my two cents
Trust me (or not) , but Flex Paste is a fantastic product. I’ve used it before multiple times. My belief in its ability is through experience using it.

The difference between flex seal and seam sealer is in the bonding.

Flex seal wipe waterproof, but doesn't do as much to bond the materials together beyond its cling ability.

Seam sealer both waterproofs while being pliable, and, retaining an ability to mildly flex without cracking to a degree, but, serves as a bonding agent to attach the parts together like automotive glue.

Most of the corrosion problems you’ll find with dissimilar metals is when copper is involved. Copper doesn’t play well with any kind of ferrous metal

Flex Paste bonds and sets up like vulcanized rubber. It remains pliable. It’s thick like peanut butter. You spread it on with a putty knife. It can fill some pretty big voids and stay put until it sets up.

i totally agree with ck80, i just didn't want to post it and potentially start issues we all know how they start in chats lol. i would use seam seal even more so with this application because hes using rivets

I appreciate the opinions really. No worries about disagreements and I dont dispute that automotive seam sealer would be an appropriate alternative to my idea of Flex Paste. However, I will continue to use what has worked for me in the past.

A friend of mine gave me a tube of this stuff to try as well. He does alot of custom fabrication in vehicles. He swears on it.
