That doesn't look like the OE alternator foe '84
Thats not the actual alternator. Its has 2 wires, one red and one brown. i have the red one hook up but the brown one is cut.

not sure about your particular setup. on my 84 cutlass the brown wire came from charge light on the dash and went to choke heater relay which was mounted by master cylinder and then went to alternator. Here is schematic picok this what it looks like.

ThanksHi, the brown wire is a Exciter, It come from a stupid light or direct from Accesory in the ignition switch, he need a little resistor like 5 ohm or 10 ohm if you not use a light, if you use a light , you can put 12 volts in one terminal and connect the brown wire to the other terminal, ( to the light),when the alternator is off the brown wire is a "negative" wire, when the alternator has excited the brown wire received 12 volts and put off the light. If you dont use this brown wire the alternator never run.
The other terminal is a sensor from voltage regulator, you only put this red wire to "bat" terminal , you dont need to put this wire to other place than the battery termnal in the alternator.

mine was just above speedo cable on firewall. it was attached to tthis olt where my wiring harness is nownot sure. mine was on the other side of master
