thats right im not too bright. Its been a week since I took it off. I am replacing the ignition wire that clips into the alternator. I had the alternator rebuilt for 40 dollars. I think the problem was the voltage regulator inside it. I just hope they replaced it like they said they did. im going to keep a spare battery just in case it does die. My question though while putting it back on, I have a rabbit ear shaped bracket that I know sits under the alternator. It has one square hole in it and one circular which Im sure the long rod going through the alternator goes through. I forget how does this rabbit ear bracket sit under the alternator. Is it needed? It doesnt seem like it.

sorry I am having a hard time following this but typically a GM alternator has two or three mounting points. On one side of the alternator you have a hole that runs the entire length of the case ... this attaches to the main alternator bracket with a long bolt. There is an ear on the opposite side (like 110 degress to 180 degress opposite). This is typically an inch thick "tab" and is for the adjusting bolt ... You should see a bracket that has a really long slot in it for making adjustments (V-belt cars - serpertine belt cars should be a rigid alternator mount). I do not believe this is the case on SBC engines but the Olds V-8 has a third bolt on the back that attaches to a support bracket bolted to the intake ... I say "believe" as I try and limit my repair work to MY car - it's been for forever and a day since I have worked on a Chevy.

A square slot is typically a place to put a 1/2" Rachet so you can place torque on the case to tighten.

If you can get to a junkyard, you can try to find a set up that is like the one you have and you can compare it to yours. Your best bet would be to get a factory service manual.

yeah

dr. ransom your on the right track there. My dad and I just dont understand where the stupid bracket goes. Its really weird actually.

take pictures - like I said I am trying to visualize it but I don't own a Chevy and haven't worked on one in some years. Oldsmobiles all that stuff is on the driver's side so it's very different.

well more bad news

dad and bro put it back together. Well it dont start, just clicks I know that menas a bad starter. I remember it doing it that a week ago when I took the battery out. It looks like Cutty was right and the others as well. The starter is or was draining my system heavily. THey are like 45 bucks I guess. I dont think its any bad wires now afterall. I assumed it was a dead battery caused by a dead alternator. Looks like while car was running the starter was still taking power. This might even be the cause of my car missing at idle and running rough you know?

why don't you charge the battery till it's full and then figure out where the problem is...it's too expensive changing parts to figure out the problem..

Just because the starter is clicking does not always mean the starter is bad. It could also mean the battery is dead or something is not letting the engine turn over freely. See if the engine will turn over with a ratchet on the crankshaft pulley. How old is the battery? It could have gone dead from sitting when you were trying to get the alternator back together. Also, starters do not kill a battery while the engine is running, I wouldnt think so at least. The only reason that would happen is because it is stuck on. The only reason that would be stuck on is because the solenoid is bad, or the ignition switch is supplying power to the solenoid at all times for some reason.

If the engine turns over fine by using a ratchet, try swapping a battery from another car or even try a jumpstart and see what happens. Also, if the battery was ran dead before you swapped alternators it will still be dead if you have not had it charged. I dont know if you have had the battery tested yet, but try that if you havent, and see if the parts store will charge it up for you if you dont have a charger.

yeah

the battery is fine definitely. Yeah the only things it could be are the starter or starter solenoid. Or even a chipped flywheel too. I am going to check all of these things tomarrow. THanks for the help though dude.

well

the starter decided to check out just fine. I dont know where to look anymore. I guess I need to start testing more wires.
