GN Another kind of Grand National Buick

There was one of those for sale around here probably about a year ago, I like the rare stuff. Speaking of the Daytona's there was one on Marketplace for a while that I was thinking of going for before I got the Blazer

K cars did some what save Chrysler in the '80's & brought us the mini van revolution. Then again it wasn't a good thing.
Still doesn't mean they weren't terrible cars. Now my BIL had a 91 Pylmouth Laser Turbo. It got 40 mpg and was very quick for the time. That 2L Mitsubishi motor was a hell of a lot more reliable than the 2.2/2.5 Dadge motor. I remember my BIL took a used 87 GN for a test drive. He blew away a 5L HO Mustang like it was standing still. Everyone knows the stock fuel pump seriously starved the Turbo 3.8 in the GN, especially after a few years of wear. Just changing that made a big difference. Buick was always below Cadillac, so of course their owners were rich, stuck up dicks. My BIL could not justify the cost of the GN even used. Our family could only afford very used cars, the Ford Fox bodies were horrible, the Dodge Diplomat PI was well a Dodge. Our small block Olds 350 then an Olds 307 powered 75 Cutlass and 81 Delta 88 were head and shoulders better than the other cars. I don't love the Olds small block just because it sounds good. It is just a super motor reliable for it's time.

I had one just like this. After embarrassing 5.0 Mustang guys (the ones who couldn’t drive a 5 speed for sh*t) , I was always slaying *ss in my little town cause there were none around and the girls thought it was sexy.

I’d buy one today and drive around to see if any of those wh*res, I mean Grandma’s are still interested in my stick.

Do you have any idea how long I've been waiting to use that?

One of my Roomates in college bought an '85. He wanted a Black one, but you couldn't buy Black cars in Arizona at the time, so he had to buy it up north. It was maybe 6 months before he sailed it off a cliff.

You show these cars to kids today and they are fascinated by them, because they have never seen them/heard about them. They'll Blah Blah Blah about old crappy Euro cars guys one Top Gear pined about from their youth, with no Idea America is where 95% of cool cars came from.

My son wanted a first gen VW GTI a fews years back. I say "you know a GLHS will literally kick the crap out of a GTI".

My son: "A whah?"

We all thought the majority of K cars were lame junk. Unfortunately Mustang's were kings of hill for performance in high school. The F bodies looked so much better but because of the TBI option, weight and Lame cam TPI autos, they got the dog reputation. In the late 80's, very early 90's, late 60's and 70's Muscle Cars were still cheap. My BIL bought 69 Beaumont and 71 Chevelle, both for 2 grand, the Chevelle with a high performance 327 that would spank 5L Mustangs. You may say, then why do you love the Olds V8? He blew up that 327 in short order, the sbc has never impressed me. He tried for years to blow up our 75 Cutlass, it just kept going and even when the wrecker hauled it away, someone bought it and drove it another 5 years.

I really wanted a Burgundy/Silver one. Couldn't find any in my price range. One Saturday I grab the Autotrader and spot a Blue/Silver gem for sale. Call the # and some chick says "ya, got it 6 month's ago brand new and right after found out I was pregnant so we have to get something else". 😢

Make plans to go see it the next day. The Husband tells me he just installed the Mopar Performance tricked out computer. 👍 Throws me the keys and says have fun. It would burn the right front almost through 2nd gear on cold tires. I was hooked. Keep in mind my current ride was a 1980 T-Bird that had a hard time getting out of it's own way.

We made a deal for this '85 with just over 10,000 km on it I proceeded to beat the living Bejesus out of it for 3.5 years even driving it through the winter on the ultra useless Goodyear Gatorbacks. Bought a couple of those and nearly had to sell a kidney to pay for them. Blew a hole in the side of the transmission and had 1 head-gasket done under warranty.

While owning this, at least 8 speeding tickets and 2 license suspensions. 🤔 I had an Suzuki 600 Katana crotch rocket at the same time and the Dodge is the one that always got me pinched. Sold it to a buddy and bought a '89 Honda Accord Coupe out of the showroom cause I was maturing a bit.

I've had an insane amount of cars over the years and this little rocket is among my favorites.

I was a Sales Manager of a Buick-GMC store in the '80's. The LeSabre GN was done just to homologate the spoiler and quarter window blockout for NASCAR. As we all know Chevy and Pontiac did their "aero" mods to the Monte and GP; This was Buick's attempt at a more sloped roof and lower profile nose.
By the 1987 model year, it morphed into the LeSabre T-Type, as showed in an earlier post. I drove Regal GN's as my company cars in '86 and '87, but the demand was so high that I never kept one very long. While I was waiting for another GN to arrive, I took a LeSabre T-Type to drive. Nice response, quick steering, decent handling, great fuel mileage and very comfortable interior. Once the Regal GN's were done, I wound up having 7 of them thru the end of production in 1989, five reds, one white and one silver.
I had a friend of mine, a mechanic at our dealership, who transplanted a Supercharged 3800 from a totaled Park Avenue into his LeSabre T-Type.
That made for a real sweet ride.
