Are we toast?

You know, problem with that report is it is politically motivated... thus the prediction of shutting this thread down likely accurate unless we shift discussion away from the report and towards climate in general.

There's a scare factor about ocean convection currents slowing and could they stop. OF COURSE THEY CAN. I did some graduate work on that in the early 2000s working with GIS modeling. The problem is, those currents are driven by multiple factors. Humans are altering the dynamics with their "green energy" push.

When you use solar you interfere with heat reflection back toward space, and that interferes with the whole rainfall cycle you're used to from being a kid in school. If the ground isn't heating as much, the air against it doesn't heat from that heat energy. That same air doesn't rise in the volume or distance into the atmosphere it otherwise would. Then you've got rainfall effects changing.

Those gift wind farms show air currents. Those air currents both push things ahead, but also create a vacuum effect pulling neighboring air in from behind. That alters rain patterns, and, changes water currents which depend on a variety of factors to function.

It's not as simple as saying, 'oh, the glaciers'....
But meanwhile, as the western world is cutting the heck out of emissions creating a boom for Chinese imports, places like India, China, etc are allowed to keep INCREASING theirs.... and they are!!!!!

Meanwhile, my tailpipe emissions matter but guys like bezos are allowed to build their p*nis rockets and got for joyrides. Those rocket launches cast so much more emissions then a fleet of cars it isn't funny. But those are OK.

I'll shut up now. I could keep going... but meh.

Agreed that this starts at the top and works it's way down. The media focuses too much on getting Joe Schmo to go green while conveniently leaving out major corporations and billionaires.

Don't believe the "experts" with all the letters after their names - this is part of the leftist power-grab just like COVID. The letters after the bureaucrat's names are meant to impress first world pawns like the tacky medals filling up the breast of a third-world general's uniform are meant to impress middle eastern goat herders.

There are real environmental problems with real solutions but they don't snag headlines - just keeping plastic out of the Ocean would be a great start. How hard could that be? If CO2 is a real issue, then build lots of Nuclear Power stations - duh. It works; pays my bills. Instead we do the opposite (now resigned Andrew Cuomo recently shut down Indian Point). The left isn't actually worried about climate change - the proof is their non-embrace of nuclear power. Imagining that the infinitely complex system of the Earth's atmosphere can be dialed in with a single variable like CO2 concentration is bad science meant only for mass consumption/manipulation. Besides, if CO2 will increase the temperature some, then that is good, because we've been oscillating through ice ages over the last several million years. I use a fermenter to keep a bubble of CO2 under a bell jar in my aquarium to stimulate plant growth and drop Ph half a point - good stuff - the stuff of life.

Things are actually getting better, but that is not the narrative. Have faith. Turn your BS filter up to 11.

I didn't bring up politics, but there is my four cents as a "Master of Science" since '04 now a "Science Denier" as of 2020.
"This is part of the leftist power-grab just like COVID"
"I didn't bring up politics"

Regardless of whichever so-called report you read, everything is in dire straights, we have 7 or LESS years before we all die, and the fuse is getting shorter by the second...chicken littles everywhere. Here's my rub with it. Every single one of them have a "BUT, IF" after it. Even that it's so dire that we're in the jaws of death, IF we stop what we're doing right now, make everything solar and wind power overnight, have EV's everywhere, we can minimize the impact when we hit that proverbial wall. The science is solid and you cannot deny it, according to them.

That is what makes me chuckle. For one, there's several countries that aren't going to play along. Also, even the ones that do, aren't going to do enough, regardless of how much they do. If they shut off every bit of electricity and fuel stations in the U.S. tomorrow, it won't stop whatever it is they're wanting to accomplish. Even if it did, they would say it won't. I believe it's all about control. Has nothing to do with saving the dolphins. There's nothing wrong with it, but I've been hearing the environment is going to fail every 7 years or so since the 1980s. So, I'm still waiting. Even a blind mouse finds a piece of cheese every now and again. You say it long enough, when it does happen, you never hear the end of it. "See? I was right!!"

Another thing that stinks to me... if EVERYONE is supposed to pitch in for this to work, why is China allowed to opt out of the Paris Climate Accord or other environmental actions? That's just moronically stupid. Puts a "fake" sign on all this hand-wringing. It does to me.

After all, if all I got is 7 years left before we all die, I'm going out hard and fast. No point saving the world for the next generation. I'm still going to recycle my old oil, and antifreeze, and not go dump garbage on the ground and all that, but I'm going to go drive my truck to the store now to get some stuff that will make me fart. I generate methane. Get over it. So you can just eat it, G.T. (you know who I'm talking about.)

I would say another rapidly growing problem in this world is the amount of "I did my own research" people.

Yes, doing your own research is important. What's also important is not assuming that what you are reading is correct just because it isn't shown on mainstream media. The news doesn't *always* lie.

While I agree that there is a lot of politically motivated nonsense to sort through, there is real stuff that you can find. Instead of Google searching, try Google Scholar.

What happened to society? I guess trusting scientists with numerous accolades and years of experience and research is too far-fetched. Being a bandwagon rider is much easier.

I use the spreadable butter containers as well as the ice cream ones in my garage. Need to wash small parts; pull a small container. Spot paint something: in goes a little of paint so not to have to lug around a gallon can. The parmesan cheese shakers, mayo and peanut20201218_172622.jpg are great for little nicnacks. Where I live here in TX we don't recycle aluminum cans! I do. I take them to a private recycle center and sell them, then I deposit the jar of the little money it is into a jar for the Lions Blind program. My little share in my corner of the world.

The problem is, news stories or articles on facepage and Google are NOT peer reviewed scholarly journal articles.

However, even scholarly work can be suspect because they are very narrowly focused, I've encountered the problem with many in various scientific fields. If C can be made of A + B they decide a+b is true, so, it drives or creates C. Many studies out there have thay fallacy.

It's like saying really fast cars have big motors. So, if we can find a car, and it has a big motor, its really fast.

But what if there's no transmission? Or no rear end? Or there's something wrong with the engine itself.??

So many of the "studies" don't look further at the big picture of the transmissions, rear ends, or engine health. They prove their small piece of a hypothesis and fail to look at bigger pictures.

And that's the biggest problem with all that climate science.

Climate Change is real.

But tackling it? You have to focus on the biggest kinds of emissions.

Which isn’t gas vehicles, it’s corporations, like big oil and other emissions from factories.

Until we globally fight corporate greed, we can’t impact the issue of climate change to a noticeable extent.

It's a top-down problem, agreed
