here is what I am talking about, this is the top of the big rear quarter glass

Yeah, you're not gonna find that stuff...

It's a plastic piece that slips inside the trim, and that edge conceals the gap inbetween the trim and the window, so you can't see the clips and such. A lot like the stuff thats on the windshield trim as well (it's usually gone too). Low mileage cars still have it intact most of the time if they don't get too much sun.
I'll try and find my trim that I took off my '79 wagon and snap a pic of what it looks like out of the car, maybe you can match it up to something similar.

thanks it is not real noticable but I know it is there and it bothers me

It's not supoposed to show. It is supposed to be up behind the aluminum trim to prevent the aluminum from rubbing on the glass.

It is supposed to show. It's there to keep stuff like snow and ice from getting under the trim and so you can't see the clips from the outside.

Respectfully disagree. I pulled the quarter glass trim off a really clean '80 wagon...it was only as wide as the aluminum. And no, it wasn't rotted off on one edge. In fact, it was snapped in like the more common front molding inserts. If it was supposed to be that wide, why did the later wagons use a vinyl/rubber reveal that was the same width as the aluminum ones used earlier?

His have slid down, I'm sure due to splitting the lip off from dry rot/heat.

Here's a pic of a less-pristine set...it's hard to see, but there's a flange on one side that clips over the edge and keeps it in place. When that flange splits, the plastic slides down.

Slightly better profile of the insert

**EDIT** Technically, the edge does show. It covers part of the aluminum molding on the "thick" side. I meant not supposed to show in the sense that it is not as wide (vertically tall?) as shown in the installed pic of slick79wagon's window. Should be tucked up behind. Clear as mud, I'm sure.

Oh man, I feel a good debate coming on!

This is one of those tricky subjects... It's hard to tell what's right when there aren't many good references left to go by.

I definately agree that the piece shown in slick79wagon's pic has slid down farther than it should be. And it should only show a little.
So it sounds like we're in agreeance to quote the great Fred Durst...

I have no clue as to why they switched styles from the earlier aluminum moldings to the later vinyl/rubber ones. The vinyl/rubber ones on my '83 are toast since the car is from Texas...
I'll try and dig up the trim I took off my '79 to show everybody. I can't remember if I stashed it in the garage, or if I put it in the back of the Malibu when I filled it with parts and drove it into the storage container I'm keeping it in. I've got a good one that'll shed a little light on this for us. One piece was crumbling like in that pic (too many jabs with the ice scraper), and one piece is very much intact. I took the trim off the '79 before I put it away because I hate the vinyl crap that is on my '83. When I paint the car, I'll be pulling the glass and installing studs so I can use the aluminum trim (and I can polish it, cause that's kinda my thing...). 🙂

I'm pretty sure that its supposed to be there. We had 3 diff wagons when I was a lad and stuff like that is burned into the brain  especially when you were the one who had to clean the glass

Unfortunately, the plastic profile trim under the mouldings on my car are shot. I haven't been able to locate any good used ones around.

Has anyone used anything else to substitute them?...aside from using the rubberized 1/4 window trim pieces from a later ('82-'83). I never did care for them. Besides, I like the look of the aluminum trim blacked out .

Jack

was that trim blacked out factory? it is on mine but it is peeling real bad and I am striping it off because I like the way the alum looks
