Frank built my 455. Hes not that far from us BuickOldsPontiac. I have a complete 455 core if you are looking for one 🙂

I will keep that in mind! Although I am still (at the moment) leaning toward a SBO, it is far from a done decision!

Straight down I-95!!!!!

I prefer to drive across the Bay Bridge. Interestingly enough, from my place in Dover to where I spend a lot of time at in Baltimore, the travel time is almost identical.

So this motor is a smog motor then? My uncle has a motor he pulled out his 442 with the same stamp but without the "a" after the F. We got excited thinking I got a sweet H/O smogless motor and were talking about building it. But then I noticed the lower case "a". What exactly is the difference?

Doesn't the "a" mean it has the ball stud hole and Z bar holes for a manual trans? Any 73 and up 455 has J heads with small runners, restricted exhaust ports, bowls and huge 40cc dish pistons with a lighter, weaker crank. 8 to 1 compression and restrictive heads is the definition of a smog motor. But port the J heads, better cam, small dish forged pistons along with better rods and crank make it better than any factory 455.

Weird, I don’t remember the Fa head but you are right that the small “a” was for the 4 speed on other castings.

What letter is on the heads??

If its a "J" it stands for junk!!

They are the worst BBO heads
