Everything is disconnected to pull the transmission but the 3 torque converter bolts and the dipstick.
I want to have an assistant there with me when I lower it. Should be able to do it one night this week but who knows, I have said that before.

The leak has been found.
I didn't need to remove the distributor. Once the transmission was out I'm embarrassed to say it was obvious.
There was no cam plug.
How does something like that happen? Who knows, I'm just happy that the problem has been found and can now be fixed.

I'd be taking the timing chain cover off to see if the bolts loosened up on the cam sprocket

Whoops! 😳 good thing ya found it, now you can worry about other things like colds and boogers and vics vapor rub

Glad ya found it, but that's an odd thing to overlook. Maybe it was pushed out by the cam?

Engine builder said he thought he remembered telling me that he still had to put it in and offered to help me assemble the rest of the motor. I remember him offering to help me assemble it but wanted ti do it myself so away I went. Being my first motor and never having seen it done I likely looked right at it and didn't know anything was missing.
Lots of assembly to do now with the transmission out but I'm freaking happy that this should be the last time it goes together for a while.

I make myself a checklist for the project I'm working on cause it's too easy to miss something like that...

That's a good policy especially if the project is spread out over months or a year.
I'm not even sure if it would have been on my checklist though. It is something that should have come on the short block.

inspect the block after it's completed...the components are listed and a bolt check...and even with that stuff can get missed. I use to work on aircraft and everything I did had to be on paper so I'm used to it
