Car wont start after changing fuel filter

Hello everyone i have a little update for those who are interested. Did some research and i think I figured out the problem. I have leaky valve covers. So i will be changing the gaskets and plugs. Since i already replaced fuel filter, coil, cap and rotor. I went ahead and pulled one of the plugs to confirm my suspicion, and it had oil on it and smelled of gas. I will be blowing the oil out before replacing the next five. That’s it for now.

Leaky valve covers are not going to make your plugs be covered in oil and smell of gas.

But a blown engine will.

Bad rings, bent / stuck valves or a timing chain

When you "stepped on it" you broke something.

Do a compression test, check your TDC

Mr TURNA I have had this car for about four months now. Put about 150 miles on it. Never touched the spark plugs until today. The very one that i checked, when i went to pull it off there was not resistance. So the plug was very loose. Would this cause a problem with compression, flooding, starting, and just about everything?

1 plug would make your engine have a miss it would not keep it from starting or running.

the plugs will not cause you to have no spark. Did you check the distributor wiring going to the cap and make sure you have power on the pink wire or it might be a red wire.

Thanks, when it comes to the ECM I am the same as Sergeant Schultz, I know nothing...🙂
I learned a lot more about those ECM's when the dealer I worked for back in the 80's sent me to GM school and the books they gave me had much more info than dealer service manuals had. I can understand why the old timers wanted no part of going to school but it was worth it for me. I don't mind helping out and sharing information I have, getting older not a young chicken any more and very lucky my son is into older cars. I still have those books.

I can't recall if anyone mention the ignition module?

I did mention it but wasn't sure if he changed distributor cap. If he forgot to put on the metal ground strap on the coil the module will fail.

Chris55444 what you need to do is make a list of what other members recommended you to do and check and take your time. I will start that list for you. We are willing to help you and don't be discouraged.

Gas flowing threw the carburetor Yes or No
Check for spark Yes or No I have seen new spark plugs being bad, if you still have the old ones put them back in
Check for 12 volts at the distributor cap Red or Pink wire Yes or No make sure the key is in the on position when you check it.
Is the metal ground strap connected to the coil Yes or No if its not connected you just fried your module
Take your distributor cap off and turn the engine over or start the engine and see if the rotor is spinning. Is it spinning Yes or No if its not spinning your timing chain has broke
