Hello everyone,
I have a Co-Worker who is trying to sell me a SBC 350 4 bolt main. The thing is it has spun rod bearings, here is the worst looking one.

My question is what is involved in getting this rebuilt? I have never rebuilt a SBC engine. Ill just buy a new crank, will i have to get the main bearings re-done?

You can go to any of the auto part stores and get a reman crank for you application. It will come with a cut crank and matching bearings for the rods and mains. You will need your crank as a core. If you take it to a machine shop and have it cut then you will need to order the rod an main bearing to match. Much simpler to just get a reman kit and it will save a lot of time also.

Oh OK nice! I am buying this for a steal so I might as well and help a Co-worker who's strapped for cash (aren't we all?!) Thanks for the response. I was hoping there wouldn't be too much involved. I will go with a new crank and the appropriate sized bearings. If there's damage to the main bearings I'm guessing there will be more work involved..I will see when I tear it down completely.

Has the crank ever been cut before?

Don't forget about the rods. Usually once a bearing spins, the rod is so badly out of round that you cannot resize it

Will you be assembling the engine?

That's what I've read so I will buy new rods and a new crank and new pistons. I will take it to a machine shop once I have it home. Still at my Co-workers place. And no I'm thinking of having a machine shop assemble the rotating assembly.

Or I might rebuild it myself...I will need to buy a lot of tools for that...but I am willing to learn and I prefer to do things myself.
