That's what I was gonna do. I will wait until the block has been inspected by a machine shop before I spend another penny.

Sounds like you might want to look at a crate motor. Or get a good runner from some one else. New crank rods pistons and machine work will be $$$$$.

Either way the shop should e able to tell you if what you have is usable or not without charging you.......if they are an honest shop

No reason to waste money you will need on tools!!!!

Well I'm willing to take a chance on this block..if it comes out to be equal money for work compared to crate engine then I will keep and use this block.

I will make my decision when the machine shop inspects it. If it's junk then I'll use it as a bench or mail box Hahaha

Before giving any advice what is your intention to do with the engine. How much of the work can you do? Rods need to be removed - checked - resized - rehung. Remove plugs, cam bearings, and reinstall. Degrease clean block, Can it be rebuilt std? I can see you putting $500 - 600 in it with out shop labor and assuming it can go back std.

My intention is a stock rebuild. Nothing fancy or anything high HP. A slight hotter cam. I have a comp cams nostalgia 30-30hyd kit laying around, I might use that. My dad gave me a bunch of rods and new pistons from the auto shop that closed at the school he works at so I might use all that stuff. My budget is about 1500$ if I can use this block.

As for work I can do just basic stuff. I can take the crank out and everything else. I just don't have any specialty engine building tools like a honer I, piston installer, micrometer etc..
My dad used to rebuild his VW engines all the time so I might get his help and keep it at my parents. My dad has everything to rebuild an engine.

David,
Sounds like your dad will be helpful in your endeavor. It doesn't hurt to pick up a book or two on building a small block Chevy engine. I think it would be a good experience for you.
However, I agree that you could easily put more, or equal amount of money into this engine compared to purchasing a crate engine. But in the same sense, you'll know what you have.
