MONTE CARLO "COPO" Monte Carlo SS - Turbosaurus Build (Swinging Dick Racing's c*ck got bent... she bounced a little too high & hard, & came down awkwardly)

I got my brother an NOS S10 manual box a few years ago - he jumped at it because it was a rare opportunity.

I'll keep the large diameter steering wheel until I get the manual rack installed... and then cut off the front frame horns.

Just a quick update. I ordered the Holley 302-3 swap pan (it has the drains for the turbos built in) and LS3 dipstick assembly, ICT's "alternator-only" FEAD which uses an LS1 style water pump vs the truck style - and puts the alternator high on the PS to make room for the headers, ICT's torque converter hub adapter, and some bellhousing and starter bolts.

Has anyone ever deleted a power steering pump and looped the pressure and return lines at the steering box? I may try this until I can swing the TRZ manual rack.
Yep. My dad used to do that. My Nova is that way. Real pain to steer if you are not moving, but works ok if car is moving.

Picked this up today... should make for less farting around.

Holley P/N 302-3

Decided that on my first day of vacation that I should tear into Quagmire. Not nearly as crusty as I expected... in fact the engine is really clean throughout and the pistons tops wiped clean with WD40 and paper towel. The well informed viewer will notice the dished pistons which are an immediate indicator of a 5.3L, and not the 4.8L I thought I had/wanted. FML.

Natasha has already cleared me to hunt down a 4.8L.

can i ask why the 4.8 is better than the 5.3?

http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/en...-4-8l-vs-5-3l-engine-tech-little-ls-slugfest/

https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/grm/gm-48l-v8/38062/page1/

Long and short of it is you can rev the piss out of a well built 4.8L and its bore/stroke/rod length make for a very robust bottom end.

The 4.8L has a rod ratio of 1.92. And it sports 12 degrees of piston dwell time. Meaning? The engine will respond better to boost than a 5.3 or 6.0 or ANY other LS series engine.

don't know how I've not read this thread before now...

love the build so far mike, and I know that even if it comes out short of the wagon, it'll still be one helluva ride!

Mike, I take it that engine was listed wrong when you bought it?? Hopefully you can get some $$ out of the 5.3, and locate a 4.8.
I'm excited to see the progress as I'm on a similar build path. Oh, I now have the valley cover torqued down with a fitting installed for the catch can system.

Yeah, I love asking someone a direct question and getting a "convincingly definitive incorrect answer". I am looking at a complete take out 2001 4.8L tomorrow - running and in the vehicle (I'll scan it with HP Tuners to confirm that its OS shows 4.8L under displacement). That said, I really want a Gen IV 4.8L.

Also, I won't be flipping this 5.3L as it is really clean, cleaner than my LS1 and LS2 were - and will make a suitable spare. I may just build it with my spare LS1 cam, LS6 springs and pushrods, 2001 oil pump (ported and shimmed) and some other odds and sods. So yeah...

So does this mean you'll be finding another G to put it in? You got a coupe & wagon already so maybe an Elky or a 4 door...
