Cutlass supreme Accident

Hi guys!
I tried all the positions and it doesn't fit ! I already managed to resale it !
So i'm now considering ordering a new starter from rockauto.
But I have a question : my oldsmobile was originally a v8 diesel, but the engine has been converted into gasoline burner with a carburetor few years ago.
So do you know if I need a starter for v8 diesel or for v8 gasoline !? Because they don't have the same reference number.
Sorry if it is a dumb question ! But I don't want to order the wrong one !
Thanks !!
Mickey

The mini starter only fit my Cadillac engine in 1 out of the 3 ‘upright’ positions. However when I went from short headers to long headers I had to turn the solenoid to the ‘straight down’ position. It works fine. I also have the pictured mini starter which works in all positions. I haven’t had the need to use it yet. See if anyone sells it near you.

I would have thought the Olds 350 and diesel starters would interchange with the diesel starters having perhaps more horsepower. Olds experts, can you confirm? If that is true, I think I'd go with the starter for the diesel.

Do you know exactly what engine is in your car? Those are definitely Olds valve covers. The oil fill in the front makes me wonder. I was not aware of a set of pistons you could swap to make the diesel (DX) block work with gasoline. I have heard that you can make a decent high-power gas engine from a DX, but it involves a ton of machining. Olds experts chime in, but look for a casting number on the block that will tell you what it is. https://forums.aaca.org/topic/43201-id-on-an-olds-smallblock/?do=findComment&comment=171946

I was thinking the car had a diesel in it and now had an Olds 350 in it but I might be wrong.

Your starter looks like the gas 350 one, the diesel starter IS different and ENORMOUS.

I just checked on my block : its written
On the top of the block, near fill tube : 395558 2
On the left head : cfd 409 147
On the oil fill tube : 6337221

When I check on internet it tells me a 350 olds in 71 cutlass !? With a 1970 engine !

Actually when I bought the car I was told that it was a diesel cutlass at first. On the dash I have a little logo "diesel" and on the hood I had a diesel logo standing up no the usual oldsmobile logo.
So my car was a cutlass supreme 1980 brougham v8 350 diesel.
But I was also told that the previous owner than the one I bought the car from, had modified the engine to make it work with gasoline.
But maybe it was just a swap with another block of another car, as the cast numbers says it a 1970 engine...

It depends if they used the diesel flex plate which also different than the gas motor, smaller diameter, I believe. Looks like they used the gas flex plate and starter.

Je souhaite que mes enfants soient aussi enthousiastes a propos de leurs devoirs. I hope that identifying the engine will help you find the right parts to fix it.
