It sounds like the solenoid is bad. With jumper cables, connect the positive cable to the top post on the solenoid. Connect the negative cable to the body of the starter. Now connect a volt meter as follows: connect the positive lead to the bottom post on the solenoid and connect the negative lead to the body of the starter. Now, using a screwdriver, jump 12V from the top post on the solenoid to the small post on the solenoid marked "S". You should see 12V on the volt meter. If not, the solenoid is bad.

It's possible the solenoid is engaging the starter drive ok but not sending power to the electric motor to make it spin.

I'm thinking the starter might need new brushes (rebuild). Do you have anyone on the island who rebuilds starters?

if the motor works by passing the solenoid then it's the solenoid that is defective. That is why I suggested to see if the motor works. I think it is easier for Mickey to get solenoid instead of a starter

I just reread it. Had the Jr. Mechanic being over excited over a late B-day gift distracting me (as he was just doing, again) so I miss read the posting.

Hi guys!!
I tested the solenoid like you said but I get 0V going to the motor so I guess it's dead !
I have good news :
I found theses parts available here :
A solenoid : it looks pretty similar

Or a starter for chevy 350

Or a high torque mini starter, is it this one compatible with oldsmobile v8?

Are theses parts compatibles ??
What would you choose ??

Thanks a lot !!

That is the same mini starter that I have on my Cadillac 500 and it works like a charm. I believe that it fits your Olds, but i'm sure somebody with absolute info will chime in.

Get the solenoid to fix your original starter and have a spare if nothing else. Yes, that mini starter will work if it for a sbc.
