Dad's 62 Ford Galaxie

The more and more I look at this car the more I think a friend of my cousin's has a 62 Galaxie convertible. I haven't seen it in 15 years or more but I do remember going over once along with a few of us to help lift the body off the frame. He said he'd never part with it, I'm sure he's still got it.

The 62 Ford is/was not an incredibly popular car but once you are familiar with it, it is amazing how much you see them on TV, especially from the time. Sheriff Andy Taylor had a 62 Ford police car in the early days of the show. If you watch a show about the JFK assassination you see them everywhere. Lee Harvey Oswald was taken to the hospital from the Dallas Police Dept. In a 62 Ford Station Wagon.

Really really neat car…..I’ve always had a soft spot for the 60-64 Ford Full size cars.

I had a 62 Galaxie with a 352 back in the 70s and did several 60-64s for customers over the years. The last one I owned was a 64 Custom 2dr post car.

It had been a 6 Cyl 3 speed car but I set it up with a 352 bored and stroked out to 401ci and a C6 transmission. I added the same factory cast iron headers and a Thunderbird Tri-Power (modified for Rochester Carbs…….long story) and Mallory Dual point w/pertonix conversion.

I don’t know what you are doing for front brakes, but in case you are not aware, 1979 Thunderbird Disc brakes are a bolt on (you either need to change over to the 79 outer tie rod ends or thin the steering knuckles so the castle nut goes down far enough to get the cotter pin in.).

Anyway I got all the mechanical done and was ready to start on paint and body and upholstery ……then someone came along with a bucket full of money and it went away.

Again really neat car, and hope I didn’t hijack your thread.

No hijack as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for your interest. We are aware of the 79 T-Bird disc brake swap but thanks for bringing it up. The car is still drum/drum but dad has the big front drums on it from the station wagon or interceptor package. They are wide shoes. 3 or 3-1/2". Those with the power booster and the car actually stops really well.

Hope my welds turn out that good when I start.

Been awile since the last update. After we shot the epoxy primer that is in the first post in this thread we discovered the car wasn't quite as straight as we thought. My brother and dad have done a lot of body work since. I would say with the exception of the passenger quarter panel, the body work is 99% there. We've been working on replacing the passenger rocker panel. Here's a look at the initial surgery....

Last weekend we finished prepping the inner rocker and new outer rocker. We used weld through primer (SEM Copperweld) and then used 3M undercoating on all of the inner surfaces except for the edges where welding is required.

We got the rocker welded on this morning. We had to break off early for a family get together and then we have the G Bodies of Houston show tonight. Tomorrow morning we will grind down all the welds and do a few touch ups where necessary. It went well. It was a good day. The rocker is NOS. Also we used my spot welder along the bottom on the pinchweld. It was great. Those spot welds were so easy. No grinding needed.
