How obvious is it to find or locate cracks on a set of used Vortec heads....or do they have to be magnafluxed? ....or do you focus in on a particular part of the head?
From what I'm understanding, you're taking arisk buying used Vortecs unless of course they've been thoroughly gone over.

They crack between the center 2 exhaust valve seats. Usually you can see it once the head has been cleaned up in a hot tank or one of those ovens that turns oil to dust.

Thank you sir. I appreciate the information.
I believe there are other aftermarket steel heads that apparently are a heavier casting and not as prone to cracking. I think it might have been Pro top line...or one of those companies.

Engine quest has heads that are I believe dimensionally the same as a vortec head, just made better.

If youre going aftermarket though there are a lot of cheap aluminum options that youd be happy with. Even the cheap china stuff is decent fro the price

If you had your heard set on vortecs thats probably the way to go, keep in mind they are bare.

By the time you get them dressed you could probably have a good used set of fastburns or other used aftermarket aluminum heads bought ready to install.

Theyre good, but for the money you could have great
