Fishing 2021

My fishing adventure today was a 22" small mouth and a 24" large mouth on the St. Joe river in Elkhart ,IN...also something that reminds me of the Olds 403 Carnage page...lol.
You know what they say, a man with a boat or a wife is sure to be broke for life!

18 fish today on Fishing Lake. I beat my Wife for number caught, 11 to 7 but her Walleye were bigger.

I went down to the boat to fix something. After that I went out for a bit. Last of outgoing tide. I found a narrow 12 ft deep channel right up against the shoreline where the Fluke were feeding. I got 7 on a lead-head tipped with a red GULP! bait. No keepers but I sure needed the diversion.

Another 5 Pike at Crooked Lake, 4 to 1 for my Wife, in the shadow of Cowessess First Nation.

Yep, I trapped her good.

We keep as much as my Wife feels like filleting. Not many lately, it really the thrill of the catch. Pike are good but the Y bones waste a lot of meat.

You know, we never fished pike even through there were plenty of them around haunts we went to when we were in New England. What do they correlate to flavor/texture wise?

My favorite we went after was yellow perch to keep/eat, but we caught our share of trout - lake, rainbow, brownie and atl salmon that were usually catch and release off the downriggers. Most of the fish these days are mild store bought varieties- cod loin,.flounder, scrod, swordfish and sashimi grade tunas.

It is white flakey meat, similar to Walleye in taste but less oily. Similar to Perch in texture but more fishy. I also like Rock Bass, pink meat, very similar to Walleye in flavour. The next time I am in Winnipeg, I need to try Smoked Goldeye. It even less fishy in taste, caught one and cooked one years ago. Even less fishy than Perch but is supposed to be amazing smoked. Channel Catfish from cold water is still the best. Firm but not super firm like Burbot which also good. Channel Catfish is close to Chicken taste, surprisingly good. I have never tried Bullhead Catfish but they are sweeter meat, the smaller the fish, the sweeter it is, my Grandfather told me.
