Super cool that your building it from an Olds block!
Thanks! Years of planning and saving into the engine. I figured if Bill Trovato can get over 1200hp on his nitrous, diesel block 350 I can get close to 1000hp with my girdle block. And if not I'll just have to start my diesel block build sooner, and sell the 1,000 pieces my engine blows into! After all it's just money right? lol

I like your attitude!

Looks like your well on your way and doing a great job. I'm kinda curious if you included the rear frame mount before cutting the old frame out. The S&W backhalf came with brackets welded on and had you make the connection before cutting. I ordered the sheet metal & tube kit and would suggest making a pattern from poster board or card board before your final cuts. If you want you can retain your inner fender wells just mae sure your front bar is high enough before welding.

Thanks. And I had thought about it but my rails are a lot higher than the s&w rails and I would have to have the bar come out at an angle downwards. So I decided to make a custom mount for rear body mounts and rear bumper out of some mild steel. Just got to get the frame under the body and get my cage welded in and then I'll fab the mounts and post pics.

Not sure if you can tell but my rails sit more than 10" above the old rails. I got the trunk cut out. When I get off work I will snap some pics or the trunk section. And I cut my inner fenderwells out all the way. With the height I want my car the factory tubs would have hit my tire

What trunk?
My trunk had a bad seal before I got it so I had some rust back there. I broke 3 of the 4 rear body bolts and the mounts are rusted on the body It looks like stamped 16ga metal so I'm thinking 1/2x1/2 square tube welded down the side then tie it into the back half. The floor where the back seat was isn't cut back far enough. It will be cut back to the cross brace for the body, where the rear seat hooked into.

Damn. That's some serious surgery. This will be a fun thread to follow.

I have a 79 Monte Carlo I have been thinking about doing this to. I don't want to go prostreet with it just big tires with mini tubs. That car needs a rear frame either way. That project is a few years away though. My question is, is it possible to back half a g body and not run a cage? Do you think the frame can be braced enough to get away with no cage? I know you are building a race car and caging it, just wandering. I am very interested in seeing your project through. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! Honestly I think that without a cage you might have body winkle issues. The backhalf needs bracing after the axle centerline. I can push down on my backhalf and watch it bounce quite a bit. After the body is mounted to the new kit, if it where to move, I could see it crushing some quarters... I will be doing down bars and cross bars off the roll bar to make it solid. I can't think of anyway to brace the rear and still get tires on there, without a cage. Bracing the xmember does not fix the flex or bounce the frame has. Hope this helps
