I needed a cup of coffee to get through the whole thing. That said, this is how we roll. Hammer, chisel, MIG, regroup. From what I have seen here, yes, more work involved, but perhaps the Astro shafts are a better choice. Unlike driveshaft U-joints, these probably don't see a lot a wear and tear except for corrosion getting in and eating the needle bearings. So, the safety issues come down to the rubber vibration damper section rotting out. GM never intended these to survive for 40 years, but aren't we lucky that lazy engineers found a solution that worked and kept recycling it over and over for us.
