I just bought two cans of the stuff from Autozone. Literally that morning Rustoleum recalled the paint - technically 'Cold Galvanizing primer'. Not sure if they will be replacing it. Part number 249324.

The zinc plated originals have a metallic grain pattern. This stuff looks like thick primer, light gray. I used it on the gravel shields on the Dana 44. Looks better than silver metallic which is too shiny for my discerning tastes. Protects and does not need to be topcoated, although a clearcoat may make it look less flat.

I used it in the past on a 4x4 steel post that I buried in 3 feet of concrete to hold up my gate. Still looks the same 10 years later. Dries really fast, by the way.

It rained until about 11AM. At 1PM I went out and the sun was shining and warm. Got a couple more coats on the body, rolled it out, and started putting base coat on the small parts. After half of the first coat, my regulator broke. I pulled a redneck move and zip tied a light kink in the hose to knock down the pressure. It kinda worked but still too much pressure. I was too pissed to stop for the day but wasted alot of paint. I'll go in the morning and buy a new regulator. I got to bolt on the front fenders and tape off the lower stripe and spray it. So hopefully tomorrow it will be striped and cleared. Fingers crossed unless something else stupid happens

After getting the car and parts in the sun, it's still got dark spots. This base coat must be a candy. If you sprayed it on the paint can label with 3 coats, you'd still be able to read the writing on it. It is just not solid enough for coverage. I'm going to throw out this paint and go get some DuPont in a shade close to this. I'm pissed. This is nearly $500 just in base alone already. This is exactly what I get for trying something different to save money. I'm going to get back on my 55 cause I'm just irritated

I have made the decision to quit on the Salon. I've got to get my 55 ready for a show in August. BUT, I have decided that when the Salon gets back in the garage that changes are coming. I'm going to chemical strip it clean to metal cause it has a ton of paint on it. I'm taking it off the frame and doing it right.

I know it's hard, but try not to get too discouraged.
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in all the things we want to accomplish, it's tough to see anything but. I know you've been waiting for the weather to break to get rolling again, but try taking a complete break from it for a while. Go work on your '55, or just close the garage door and forget about them both for a couple weeks. When you're ready, start tinkering again, and before you know it, things will start co-operating for you, and it won't seem so bad. I've walked away from mine for as long as 3 months before I was ready to start up again.
hope this helps ya out.

man you have been thrashing hard on it. Good on you to realize that its a good time to take a break.

Sorry to hear of the issues. I've been waiting to see the paint work finished on this. I can't blame you for stepping away for a little while. I've been in the same type situation in the past and sometimes the second effort while you are still annoyed can end up worse than the first effort. Hopefully the '55 is more cooperative.

I hate to point out to you that the Salon was just sitting there when you walked up and made a mistake of some kind; therefore what's the difference if you pull up to the 55 with the same mentality? Don't give up just take a break. I and some others encouraged forum member 78gp not to give up on his pontiac at a failing point he reached after a similar post, he was tempted but he sat on the project for a while came back out and it's starting to look fantastic now. I just took a car cover off my 85 project because I got too frustrated around Black Friday last year to figure out the electrical gremlins and the carb when it got cold out - but when it gets hot next week it's on. I don't regret waiting nearly 6 months to pull it back out - I thought it would have a lot more rust on it, but it looks basically the same so I'm glad I just sat back on it and didn't try to work on stuff I'm not familiar w/ when it was cold. A build thread I had forgot about nearly 2 years ago just got a few fresh posts the other day. Would have thought the guy sold the car or something, had he not come back the other day from retirement.
