That is absolutely ridiculous; I tryed to sell nicer cars for a better deal than you just described with titles in hand up to date and still no bites. It's a disgrace on ebay when someone misrepresents the rest of the people trying to make money legitimately advertising things on ebay with more accurate descriptions... You should definitely complain. I got reprimanded on there temporarily for a much more minor 'offense' than you just described.

After a long needed break from my Salon project, I am slowly starting to chip away at it once again. I drug out my Saginaw 4 speed that has leaks everywhere to clean, install new gaskets/seals/bushings, and paint. That went nowhere fast. The tail shaft won't come off fully. It only comes off about an 1/8 or 1/4 inch. I looked at a blown up diagram and see a clip but can't find it in my trans. I posted this in the driveline section hoping someone could shed some light on the subject. I did a bing search but nothing tells where or how the clip comes off. I hate to load this leaking and stinking trans in the back of my wifes car to take to a trans shop.

Glad you are back at it!

Take the side cover off. Inside there is a retaining ring that when expanded will release the rear bearing and the tailshaft will come out.

I got the trans apart finally with help from the reply in my other post. Rotating the tail shaft till the clip appears is the trick. If you don't, you won't see it. When I turned the tail shaft the clip and notch appeared. My snap ring pliers did not open the snap ring enough so I ground the contacts on the pliers till they opened further. I went ahead and pulled all the clusters out to a bare case. It needs some washing. I did find my reverse idler gear slightly chewed. Going to replace it. I drove this car before I tore it apart and the trans seemed fine. Going to paint the trans cast coat iron. I'll blast and paint the bell housing cast aluminum. Then I'll paint the side cover semi gloss black and install brand new gold cad grade 8 bolts and washers for a really nice finished look.

After careful inspection of all parts with my reading glasses on, I found both thrust washers on the lower gear cluster had some wear from their shim/bushings. I'm assuming that this small bit of wear is what caused the reverse gear teeth to get nicked up. Thank goodness for ebay. Found new thrust washers and a brand new 18T reverse idler gear. Also found a new plastic vent assembly since mine has a crack in it. Just under $100 for everything. I've already got more money in this car than it will be worth so whats another hundred? Lol

I know how this is!!!

So glad to find this thread back on the 'top twenty' again! I have a truck project trapped in paint jail, so I feel your pain about paint issues. This is why everyone searches for a cherry so they can just turn wrenches.
