my 8.5 rear in an 86 cutlass 442 will spin both wheels during a burn out. But when i had it up on a jack and spun the wheels by hand the wheels moved in opposite directions (one wheel spins forward and the opposite wheel spins backward.) I always thought that a posi rear both wheels whould spin in the same direction when up on a jack.

Any one set me straight here?
If you can powerbrake your car and it lights up both tires...its a posi...period.
dont attempt at home.....lol

in your 1st post you said you spun one wheel and the other spun in the opposite direction. That means it's an open rear end and not a posi.

This!!!

It can spin both tires (or not) on the ground under power and that does not in any way insure that you have a posi. From the sound of it you definately have an open rear. But since you seem to be getting sooo many different stories and suggestions, pull the cover off.

Ive never seen an Open Diff spin both tires on dry pavement from a stand still....

after all the debate i popped the cover and took this picture. Open or Posi?

X2..like what He ^^ said about the wheels goingt in opposite directions??

So maybe the clutches are worn out? I read that it takes 400 ft lbs to break free the clutches. Which is easy for the car to do turning a corner, but very hard for you to do with the car up in the air.

if you are going to use synthetic oil most of them come with the posi additive for the clutches so you son't need to add the posi additive. Too much posi additive will make the clutches slip.

told you guys  Mine does the same as his, spin one wheel they turn opposite, but i know what I have in there and everything is in good condition.. I always thought because limited slip diffs only engaged when the tire starts slipping, and not a full time posi
