I'm pretty sure it is a lifter. It randomly ticks and then gets quieter for a bit. It is not as loud now as when we first got the engine running. If I rev it up it gets quieter and mostly is loud at idle- when oil pressure is low. Though when I put a mechanical gauge on it the pressure was 60 cold and 30 hot at idle. I heard about the water trick and that was supposesdly for loosening and blowing out carbon from the combustion chamber. I tried it once and I got lots of steam and smoke but it did clean a lot of crud out. If you remember when lead was removed from gasoline Holley and others sold a water injection kit for high compression engines. The water prevented detonation and as a side benefit cleaned the chambers. I am going to take the car in at my house for a while. It needs to pass inspection and while I am at it I will try some solvents on the rings. EDIT: He just brought it over and the lifter has quieted down significantly. Things are looking up.

Is this better? Watch to the end.

These kids have way to much money to burn.

With all the crap they did to that car I could have used it for a daily driver for a couple of years.

It is just content... that WD40 video has nearly 4 million views. That is a pretty good return on some hundred dollar beaters and a few bucks in KY Jelly.... err.. WD40.

DON'T USE WD40 AS A PERSONAL LUBRICANT!*

*totally not speaking from experience.

I had stuck rings in an Olds 350, it didn't like 15W40 diesel oil. I tried Seafoam, down the throttle body, in the oil and gas, also ATF in the oil and Gunk engine flush, none did squat. I used Kleen Flo combustion chamber cleaner spray. It has a unique strong smell, I have used other products with the same smell that worked well. I fogged it till it stalled then sprayed a bunch more and let sit overnight. Start and run till the smoke goes away. Another product is GM engine flush and also their combustion chamber cleaner. Either way it cut oil consumption in half and added 30 to 35 psi compression on the two low cylinders.

That sounds like something I used on outboard motors that had taken a dunking. Thanks for reminding me! The lifter has quieted down to an occasional tick and the rings are next. I will do that procedure while the car is here. I tried a different carb today and without driving it I like the idle better. I'll test again tomorrow.

I was thinking the same thing... However, would you really want to be stuck driving a Ford probe for a few years? I have a MINT 35,000 mile 2002 Ford focus as a daily driver I got in 2012 with like 10k on it. It's such a nice low mile car that runs great gets 29 mpg combine city highway driving. But it's so boring. I want to get rid of it, but I would feel guilty selling it to someone who'll trash it. I keep trying to find someone to sell it to that I know will take good care of it because it's so nice but I can't lol. I guess I'll drive it till it rusts away or dies... Ugh... Gonna be stuck with this thing for like 25 years.

Remember the Pontiac 400 that was full of water and stuck tight? (doing the unstuck) I got her working and it is very strong. But there is a stuck lifter tapping away and the rings must be rusted stuck because it is oil smoking on acceleration. When it gets put away for the winter I plan on filling the combustion chambers with ATF and letting it soak until next year. What would you recommend in the short term to get them loose?
i assume its carbureted? if so, when its running and warm you can put atf through the carburetor and work the throttle to keep it running, it will smoke like a freight train, at least half quart, you can use a squirt nozzle like from the diff fluid bottles to squirt it in gradually. i had a 73 impala that sat for 15 years and i used this procedure because the rings were stuck and it was burning oil, after i did this i let it sit for a half day and came back to fire it up and after a while it quit smoking. i sold the car and the guy who bought it made it a daily driver, no smoke. hope this helps.

I got my truck pretty hot pulling mountains in a cross country move with a trailer loaded heavy enough to splay the axles this summer. Had a bit of top end noise in it after the fact.Figuring I gummed the top end up a bit I put a bottle of rislone in it next service, and this last one. Top end is quiet as a church mouse. I would start there, or with something like it. You may get lucky, and just have gummy deposits.
