I wish all heater cores were as easy as a G-Body

On a side note I thought the starter replacement under the intake of the North Star was going to be a pain that went quite easy.

Same here. I was worrying that it was gonna be a time consuming, aggravating mess. Turns out, it took less than an hour and really wasn't much trouble at all.

Thank you for your input. 4 hours isn't bad. This is a plainjane car...no console, etc....so that alone would make it a little easier. I've heard in some cases of that partuicular job taking up to 8 hours or so.

The guys on 4eyedpride forum were very helpful!

I think I have found the info on their site before... very informative.
I guess it could be done without completely disconnecting everything. Maybe just dropping the dash enough to access the heater core door.

Just remember.....all this is character building. Of course some of us have had as much character as we can stand

I've had both easy & difficult experiences performing this job over the years. I once replaced the heater core in a 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood which was a similar experience to your Ranger experience. I've also had a few difficult experiences where the entire car was built around the heater core. With my difficult experiences it didn't help the situation that I didn't have the service manual and this was before the youtube days..
Don't feel too bad, Youtube has got nothing on the 96-98 ZJ's except poorly lit videos where most of the important steps were skipped or where they butchered the dash shell with a sawzall/angle grinder to get to it without taking it off. I actually like this jeep too much for that nonsense.

If you think about it a bench seat only has 4 bolts so a lot of things are easier without the seat in the way. Plus look at all the spare change you will find
I found about $4 in change, and close to 25 hair ties. Apparently, the original owner was a hair stylist according to her business card.

2nd Gen camaros were no fun either. Basically remove the entire dash to get in at it.

My most recent one of those was a nice survivor 78 z28... I was detailing the interior and saw the first signs of a leak starting. Decided to just sell the car rather than go through that job again.
