Haven't had my 86 Monte base coupe long & am not the most mechanically inclined, but noticed right away the idle was a little off but never terrible. Anyway, flashforward to now I thought I'd hit the carb with some cleaner. Revving the engine by hand with the little arm under the hood (which looked rusted a bit) I noticed the idle would get stuck (sometimes really high, sometimes low). I didn't clean the carb at all BTW (just took the cover off).

Anyway, took it for a quick drive afterwards & now it wants to stall between gears & seems to really struggle/shake when trying to gain speed after switching from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, etc. So something is def way off now. Any ideas what I can try? Everything stock w the V8.

sounds like the fast idle on the passenger side of the carburator is getting stuck but I could be wrong since that is an electronic quadrajet

Thanks. Can I adjust this somehow?

I also forgot to mention that on one of the fast idle points, I tried turning the engine/car off & it kept puttering refusing to shut off.

You should not need to adjust it, it don't come out of adjustment from being used, it could need to be cleaned. There are a few things that could cause run on, a stuck choke would cause high idle and run on. If I were you I would get the carb rebuilt by someone that has good reputation rebuilding electronic quadrajets.

When was the last tube you lubed the linkage on the carb?

Spray it with some WD-40 type product.

I haven't yet but was about to go do just that. You're talking about the accelerator linkage to the carb, correct?

Also, WD40 or Gumout carb/choke cleaner? I have both.

I would spray WD-40 over the entire carb let it sit for a minute. Work the throttle by hand.

Then spray it again and start it.

and work the fast idle linkage

Well, I hit it all pretty well with cleaner, worked the linkage & let it sit for a few. As I was working the linkage I noticed the little metal arm moved pretty freely & had quite a bit of slack & was getting stuck in different positions where it loops through, causing the idle to get outta whack. I'm kinda unsure how much slack this should have or the correct position it needs to be in, so just left it where it connects all the way through the curved part.

* Pic uploaded with the arrow pointing to where it was getting stuck (this position was making it idle super fast).

Anyway, took it for a spin & it didn't seem to wanna stall anymore, but still wasn't quite right. Was getting the acceleration shake at highway speeds & the noticed the idle had more of a fast "chugga chugga" sound than before. Wasn't trying to stall but still seemed to struggle.

Did you use cleaner or WD-40?
