Amen to that. These people need to learn it is either the breeding or training that makes a dog dangerous. Pit Bulls used to be called nanny dogs because of their gentle nature. You may be able to get around or fight the legislation because if it says it bans the Pit Bull breed, technically they don’t exist. Pit Bull is more of a classification of dog, not a breed. The dogs under the classification are either a mix of other breeds or a pure bred other breed of dog; i.e. American Bull dog or they are misidentified as a Pit Bull. Every Pittie I’ve ever encountered has been the sweetest dog you’d ever want to meet.
Nice chickhounds you got there Joe. And I’m an animal lover, but a dog person. But that is a pretty cat.
I'm hesitant to contribute to any sort of debate. I have (technically, my daughter does) a pitbull that we got from a rescue a few years ago who was reported to be a 2 year old stray. She was also reported to be a "Boxer mix" -- wink, nudge. That was because she was a 2 time last minute death row pardon, getting shuffled to other shelters so they rebranded. We were given no history but were told that she was aggressive toward most men but took to me right away. She's mellowed out quite a bit but occasionally just decides she doesn't like someone. Always tall men wearing hats. Women and kids have always been fine. So my solution is to do my best to keep her out of any situation where she might get herself in trouble.
I'm not a pitbull apologist. While I agree that dogs are dogs and training is 90% the key, the fact remains that some breeds are physically stronger than others. Pitbulls are extremely athletic. Likewise, personality and temperament traits are more pronounced within breed classifications. Pitbulls (all terriers, really) are extremely focussed and determined. Those are just facts of the breed.
Surprisingly to me, ours is very sensitive. She knows when she's messed up and is in trouble, usually before I even know. She does best with firm boundaries and I make her wait for permission for everything.
My experience with pits has been positive. I've found them to be friendly and forgiving. They are also loyal to the core, which can be a blessing and a curse. I will say though, I don't worry about my wife or daughter being home alone with brown dog on duty.
FWIW, I've been bitten or nipped by Cocker Spaniels, Poms, a mini Schnauzer, Golden Retriever, Black Lab, and some random mop dog on the beach, but never a pitbull.
Not sure I'd purposely seek out another pitbull for a pet, but they've definitely grown on me. It's just important to understand the breed and handle them appropriately.

I agree, any big dog should be allowed if you have the space and a fenced in yard. My problem is all the inbred retards all needing tough, vicious dogs to leave tied up all day or inside destroying the place they are renting.Yeah, mentioned this before on another thread I think but the same people that called animal control on my boxer right after we moved in were responsible for getting enough signatures to ban pitbulls in the township we live in (again clear out here in the sticks). Treto was less than a year old and not full grown so they probably thought he was a pitbull.
And what is the shelter full of? Pitbulls that I cannot even rescue to a good home on 10 acres clear out here in the sticks!

Yeah, I’ve told ASPCA and other local animal charities that come knocking . . . Show me MFs in handcuffs and I’ll give you all the money I can afford. Continuing to show me horribly abused animals is NOT solving the problem! Of course other ignorant MFs that think it’s the dog’s fault so they set out to have the dogs banned even clear out in the country? Just sad as I could easily provide a great life and home to at least one, maybe two more dogs.

supposed to be a Maltese mix. looks like a lot of jack r to me. this was a rescue dog. she was turned in as a stray dog in Fresno Calif. in May of this year. she then went to West Virgina. then to Ohio where she hit the dog lottery and won a trip to our house. we love her very much. we lost our Maltese to AHMD in june. i've had dogs since i was about 4 years old. i'm 73 now and still love them. we wanted an older dog (this one is 1 1/2 years old) we wanted a low energy dog (missed on that one to). never saw a dog fly through the air like this one.
Forgot to put up pic of my other dog which is 21 years old & still with us, the wooden dog I carved as a valentines day present for the wife for feb 1999. As if woodcarving something to look realistic isn't hard enough, I was modeling off a growing dog, one that wouldn't keep still either. I carved wrinkles, moles, one ear flopped back, & hand burned the hair pattern. Stain color has horribly faded & hair has worn down from handling. Still looks much more realistic in person with darker lighting & looks like 1 yr old dog.
When I gave to my wife, I bought the real dog outback & walked back in with the wood dogs head sticking out my jacket, with the dog's red collar on it. Wife petted the head, smiled & went back to watching tv. A few seconds later she starts freaking out because the dog wasn't moving . Then the real dog runs back in through the dog door while she looks back & forth at both in confusion. Priceless moment.
