Is This A Scam?

Nice car! I daily a 98 M3 sedan. I too was looking for a nice sporty car and try my best to be the opposite of the BMW douche stereotype.

Only bad thing is the relatively expensive parts. I'm sure you've read this before but I would seriously recommend replacing your coolant system if it hasn't been recently, especially the radiator/pump/and belts. I didn't take that advice seriously and ended up having the plastic radiator neck snap in traffic and it instantly overheated which warped the head. Luckily I had the skill and tools to replace it but it wasn't cheap and I still suspect the block may have cracked as it seems pressure still builds up very slowly in the coolant.
Yeah that was the bad thing about Matt's 540. It was somewhat unreliablewith only 60k miles on it and was expensive to fix every time it broke down. Very fun to drive though.

Yep, previous owner replaced the radiator, fan and clutch, and water pump all about 10,000 miles ago, and gave me all the records proving it was done. I did the belts myself about 1,000 miles ago. I still find myself always looking at the temp gauge, even though it's never gone past 12 o'clock. I haven't found parts to be too expensive, only certain ones are. Like the $500 plastic valve cover. But if you shop around, and find good used stuff, they aren't really as bad as everyone makes them out be.

I really like the bimmer regardless, and I'm trying to swap some of the M3 stuff over to make it what I want. I really want some dove grey Vader seats!

When I saw that you had updated this thread I was hoping it wasn't to tell us that it was a scam and you were now out the car and the money.
Looks like a nice car to keep.

Fear not, I'm not a very naive person, and I am usually pretty quick to identify scams. This one was a little different though, because the buyers were local and met in person. Regardless, I still didn't like the idea of a check so I called it off and quickly after came to realize I don't really need to sell this car 🙂

The seats are pretty nice! Except my passenger side has two worn seat gears that cost $40 each to replace. Been thinking about trying to 3D model new ones and print them.

All in all I love driving the car. I just wish I got it 75k miles ago.

Just a side note of reality: go with your gut! If it looks like sh*t and it smells like sh*t then it is probably sh*t. I was contacted a day after I posted my bu' online and the guy was telling me he is deployed and wants the car. Sure buddy. Why don't I just drive it to u as well and hand u my check book! Obviously you are dealing with a different scenerio as you have met them in person but the thing that sounds funny is the situation with the check. Again, if you can verify funds and the check is legit then maybe it's good to go. However, you can get stiffed on a certified check too. If I were you, I would agree to hold the car until the $$$ is paid in full and then let her rip! When I sold my last car, they wired the money direct to my account and when the money was there, I let her go. Just my .02. Don't want to see you get the ole rubber fist.
