Malibu Wagon 83 from France

Sebastien,
I originally had that same type of (604) steering box in my car. They are known to be "leakers".I replaced two of them many years ago, until I got one from a Monte Carlo SS which is an 800 series box. Much better steering gear and closer ratio steering.
The old 604's that I had leaked at the pitman shaft seal. I would replace that box with the 800 series from a Monte Carlo SS, IROC Camaro, Trans Am GTA, 442, Buick GN, Hurst/Olds.

Did you check the front end parts to see if there's anything loose? It sounds like you have alot of play in your steering.
Try jacking the car up with the front wheels off the ground. Have someone turn the wheel side to side to see the steering linkage move. Make sure you put jackstands under the car before going underneath to look around.
Let us know what you find.

Bonne journe'e

Jacques

Hello,

Thank you Jack, Thank you Pat, for your advice. You're really nice guys to devote time to help me.

Between time there's new on my steering.
I tells you:
One morning wanting to go to work, I start my wagon, and more play in my steering. You know why?
I could no turn the steering wheel to the right , steering wheel locked, yes for the left steering wheel turn but does not return to the right . Since the Malibu is a stopping and steering gear has only two years.

Two years ago when I ordered this steering gear I also bought a steering gear four bolts (clic error on my part). In 2010 I did not know the steering gear four bolts could replace the steering gear leaking (604).

Now it is the steering gear four bolts on my Wagon. I removed the pitman arm from steering gear deteriorated, but It is not good
I had to buy a new pitman arm, I is awaiting delivery, I hope it's good.

Good night, Bonne nuit.

No problem, that is what we are here for. Just so you know Maya.bz is relatively local to you (69) Rhone alps, very trustyworthy and well connected in US car hobby in France, knows who to avoid and who to trust when it comes to part vendors and mechanics in France. I've sent him parts in the past. He is one of the good guys.

A+

Pat

I am not interested to buy parts in France (bad experiences)
For me to be passionate American is buying maximum in america and driving with my V8.(He also remains parts from the black wagon)

A plus.

Sebastien,
I'm sorry, I forgot to tell you that the 4-bolt 800 series steering box requires a different pitman arm . The 604 type does not interchange, but you already found out.
The power steering hoses will interchange to the new box.

It sounds like Pat has good information for you. It's always good to know who in your country can and cannot be trusted in this business.

Bonsoir mon ami

Jacques

I live my passion has 100 percent and not need a car that shines for go only the meeting.
I have no french Flag but a american Flag (bought in USA).
I never been vacation but one day I go on vacation with my family in America.
I do not say God Bless france but I say God Bless America
Hope you understand me.

Good day Jack.
A plus tard.

Hello Sebastien,
It sounds like you were born on the wrong side of the pond... You seem to be more of an American patriot than a French patriot.
I hope you receive your pitman arm soon so you're able to get back on the road. You seem to enjoy getting packages from the US. That's good. Keep that wagon going.

A plus tard
Jacques

I can understand you Sabastien, I too like the US better than the country I am in and did try to move there but I was unable to get the green card..oh well, c'est la vie
