My Dodge Truck Project (Cummins Inside)

Stuff has gone up 35 cents since Thursday night. Usually it's about 25 cents cheaper at Sam's Club or Costco but not the case right now. I think Sam's might be 10 cents cheaper. No end in sight until this Ukraine sh*t ends.

Might have to start cooking my own French fry oil.
Or mount a harpoon onto a winch, spear random EVs and let them pull you around town. Small scale pyrotechnics to release the barbed hook when you need to switch pullers on your route.

Clean energy.

When the dart buries itself in the tailgate, I think someone would notice the Tesla model X flapping its doors, flashing it lights and emitting loud farting noises in alarm.

My brakes still haven't felt right even after replacing the leaking booster. Hydroboost is weird and I'm not super familiar with it however after a bit of driving around I've noticed that the power steering is almost nonexistent when I have the brake pedal depressed. The brakes work fine on their own and the power steering works fine on its own, but they don't work when you use them at the same time.

The power steering pump is driven off of the vacuum pump which is driven off of the timing gears and it comes out as one assembly. The seals in the vacuum pump are a common source for oil leaks and I don't doubt for a second that mine was leaking, so I ordered the seal kit from Cummins which is what you see pictured above.

So I cleaned and disassembled the vacuum pump and reassembled it with new seals and bought a Cardone reman steering pump. I had to replace the hose on the power steering return lines, I just used some leftover transmission cooler line. I filled it with power steering fluid, I've always thought Saginaw pumps do better with PS fluid than transmission fluid but that's just my opinion. Ford pumps are a different story.

Took it for a short drive and the brakes and steering feel much better. The pedal returns much faster and stops the truck with much less pressure.

Temps are warming up and I'm not driving this thing without A/C this summer so I spent time today figuring out why it isn't working. The system was still full or at least mostly full of refrigerant. Tested the clutch relay, it checked out. Went on to test the clutch itself, hooked power directly to it, and it worked. Tested the low pressure switch, it was fine. Last thing to check before I started trying to find shorts was the high pressure switch and that turned out to be my problem. Easy fix. Wrap this bish in electrical tape and send it 🤪

I kid, I kid. I'll pick up a new one from one of the parts chains.

I also spent some time investigating why my vents are stuck on defrost. Most of the time the cause is vacuum leaks but I tested for vacuum all the way to the switch and I have strong vac the whole way. So I removed the switch from the dash carefully so as not to break the dash into even more pieces, and took the switch itself apart. It's a simple mechanical switch, not much to go wrong but I quickly found the issue. That orange silicone rubber seal is what moves back and forth to select the vents, and you can clearly see where it is torn and peeling back. No one reproduces this switch that I can find. I'm feeling a junkyard trip tomorrow.

This thing should be just about sorted.
I appreciate your optimism. I'm cautious about what I say because anytime I say something is all set, I find more problems. There are small things here and there and enough cosmetic stuff to keep me entertained for a while but I feel comfortable enough to depend on it for transportation.

It's an old truck, comes with the territory. I'm constantly reminded of stuff I ignore on my trucks, but they've been from CO to MI to CA and back, both of them loaded.

Sign of a good truck is how long the list of unfixed problems get while it keeps doing its job.
