My Ford Truck Project (And Other Projects)

I messed around with these after dinner for a while. I stripped the clear off of two of them. Lord do I miss methylene chloride. The old aerosol stuff took the clear off in minutes. This new stuff took a couple hours. The one on the left still has clear, the one on the right is stripped.

Then I began sanding on one. I've got the worst of the corrosion removed but it still needs some more sanding before I can go to the next grit. Apparently the plastic thread inserts are NLA from Ford. Wish I would've known that before I punched them out with a screwdriver. I'll be more careful with the others.

I stripped the clear off the other two wheels then sanded and polished until I couldn't take it anymore. Bring back methylene chloride, this stuff sucks-

Left still has clear on it, right is finished.

They aren't perfect but they are a lot better than what I started with. I only sanded to 800 grit before I went to polish. If I wanted a mirror shine, I'd have gone to 12 or 1500, but my patience was really dwindling. It's not like they are going on a show truck.

I started on the center caps too. They are kinda rough but aftermarket replacements suck and good ones are rare, so these will do. I may use the red caps that are already on it, even though these black caps are technically the correct ones.

I'll take them into work probably sometime this week and swap the tires over.

10 Hole Alcoas are THE wheel for these 90's fords.

It just wasn't right until you found these wheels 🙂

I know... 🙂 I'm pretty excited about them. Was it you who mentioned before that it needed a set of these? I was just glad to finally find a set that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

Highly likely.

My neighbor kitty corner to me has a MINT original 95ish red ext cab short bed f150 with those alcoas.

A two tone 250 or 350 powerstroke in two tone white/red ext cab short bed on alcoas is like my dream pickup.

Alcoas look great on almost any truck, even the new ones look great with them. I've had thoughts of body swapping this truck onto a Powerstroke F250 chassis, would make for a paperwork nightmare though. These trucks do look great in two tone.

What would mess the paperwork up? Does PA look at the frame VIN? I suppose emissions could be a problem. "I'm sorry, sir, but your particulate content is way too high!"

Nobody is looking at frame VIN, but the weight class stuff would get messy and the diesel engine would be even worse. If you know a notary, you can get the weight class stuff worked out without too much trouble. Its been a while since I looked into this, but from what I remember, if you convert a gas vehicle to diesel in PA, the only "legal" way to register it is to get a specially constructed vehicle title, which is not an efficient process and you have to get a new VIN from the state. I dont know anyone who has gone through the process successfully.

I can work out inspection stickers, but if an astute cop pulled me over and noticed the registration said "1/2 ton gas" meanwhile I have 8 lugs and black smoke spewing from the tailpipe, it would probably raise questions.

Of course the problem really lies in the VIN plates on the cab under the windshield, and its not like those vin tags are welded to the body...😗 But with all the work involved I don't know that I'd want to risk losing the whole vehicle over a couple rivets and a piece of tin.

After all the research, my concensus was if I want a Powerstroke F250, just buy a Powerstroke F250.

Of course this also puts the kibosh on a potential 4BT swap. Fūcking Pennsylvania...
