I'm not super familiar with the Olds engines. What side is the fuel pump on and is it cam driven?

The pump is on the passenger side, and looks upside-down from you Chevy guys....works off of the cam sprocket. Is the pump torqued down? Cam sprocket loose? Bent push-rod?

Have you tried running the engine by removing one plug at a time to see if it's related to a specific cylinder?

I think ed means plug wire.

many ways to trouble shoot an engine, pull one plug wire at a time and see if it's specific to a cylinder. Does it have a new balancer on the front? Old ones can fly apart if the rubber is cracked and old and sound like a knocking sound. take off the valve covers if pulling the plug wires doesn't solve it and put each piston at TDC on compression. If a rocker is loose it could be a bent or broken pushrod. Or a rounded cam lobe not opening the valve. My Tbird made a nasty knocking sound after some high revs and burnouts and I thought it was toast. Turns out a lifter seized and it bent a pushrod into a banana.
If you think the knock is bad enough to where it scares you to start it, just suck it up pull the motor back out and asses the damage. Better safe than sorry.

does the knock appear as soon as you start the engine or does it show up after the engine is at temp. If it only happens when the engine is hot it could be a carbon knock and water poured slowly down the carb while the engine is running will cure that...
