Welcome back Bro!
I love what you did with your rear bumper. Infact I had the same idea, only that I planned on using the license plate pocket from a first generation S-10. It wouldn't have come out as nice as yours. Plus my rear bumper is starting to develop some rust issues as well. I also thought about smoothing the rear tailgate.
Do you also plan on smoothing out the bumper bolts...and of course welding in the bolts? I'm guessing that you also have to cut out a recess in the support bar to clear the license plate recess.

Keep those pics coming. It's nice to see you back at it again. I kind of missed not seeing your thread on a regular basis.

BTW, what gauge sheet metal are you using on license plate recess?

Keep up the excellent work.

Hey guys! Thanks! It feels good to be back on the ol wagon.

Jack, the plate box is 16 ga, just because I had it. The patch for the bumper is made from material I cut out to mount the box

I have been trying to talk myself out of smoothing the bolts......but think I will do it anyway (on the top row) I picked up license plates last week, so I'm gonna be driving it soon..........oh yea I did notch the bumper support aprox 1 3/4" @ the top and I think about 1" @ the bottom (with the torch  )

Blake, I have been dreading changing out that effin timing cover on this thing. That task alone has kept me off to this for a while, I was too pissed to deal with it!
Also just been busting my balls trying to make a living (I gotta EAT!!! 😀 ) I've pretty much given up on the self employment chit for now as my primary toy money. It's been too much time, driving, and PITFA for VERY little $$ per hour.
I have 3 interviews lined up in the next few weeks. The one I hope I get will still be lots of travel, but much better toy money 😀

Dude wtf, I was gonna paint the wagon black too. Been thinking of going to silver anyways the past couple of weeks, youve given me a good idea, I was planning on finishing the body work and then pulling the body off the frame and blasting that clean. Anyways keep it up

Thanks again, Brian.
I think I happen to have some 16 ga. sheetmetal lying around. I might have asked you this question before, but what did you use to cut into the bumper? Angle cutter, cut off wheel, etc. combination of tools?
I have an old rubber strip type bumper that I can sacrifice as a guinea pig...and a spare reinforcement bar...Hmmmmm.

I guess between my oxy-acetylene torches and lil' MIG welder I should be in good shape.

You do nice work, man.

Thanks malibuSS......I was going to do a black/silver two tone but ran out of time. Don't bail on the black on my account, I won't rag on ya for it ..............much 😀

Jack, I cut all of the bumper cuts with a die grinder and cut off disks(harbor freight stuff)
I did cut some of the flat stuff with my Jet horizontal band saw(set on the vertical position) until I broke the blade 😳
I use a angle grinder(electric) with varous flaper disks and grinding abrasive disk to clean up and smooth it out

DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!

Brian,
Thanks again for the information...and also the encouragement. It sometimes takes alittle effort to get my old *ss in gear.
Your work so far has been top notch...gotta give credit when credit is due...

One other quick question, if you don't mind. When you welded up the pocket in the tailgate, did you cut out the metal and butt weld the piece in..or did you fit the metal piece onto the crimped edge where the plastic bucket usually fits in? overlapped style in other words.

i was lookin back at the pics of the wagon and man i wish u were out this way my malibu needs some paint.. ur wagon came out GREAT :respect:
