little update....

Yesterday I painted the jams on the doors. I switched to a medium catalyst and thinned the clear 10% with medium reducer. the paint flowed out much better while requiring less material to keep the slick finish. Most important, no solvent pops!

It will be a week or so before I can start back on the body.......again

lookin good I wish I was that far along on mine but I drive it daily

Lookin' real good....you're making lots of progress. I'm envious.
What color is that you're using? It looks like an OEM color.

wow, this wagon looks fricken great! keep up the good work!

Thanks for the kind words everybody!, I just got back in town.....time to prep the body for the re-paint :x

The color is R-M Diamont it is the plain black. the lights and camera flash play with the tint at some angles. It's just a black base/clear

LMAO!!!!! My Diamont base/clear did the same sh*t! Unfortunately, I could not afford to do it again and I have to live with it. I wonder if this is a problem endemic to that paint system? The guy at the local Finishmaster said the base is very reactive, but I have NEVER had this sort of thing happen to me before. (Not a pro, just a mediocre schmuck who can't pay anyone who charges more than free).

BTW, what temperature was it when you sprayed your paint? For me, I sprayed the front clip on a fairly warm day, but the shell at night when it was probably around 55-60 degrees out. The front came out beautiful, but the shell was awful.

I'm glad someone thinks it's funny....sure as hell is not funny from here.

I have never had it happen before either and I have used basf/r-m products on 5 or 6 cars.

These things almost always have a user error as the cause. People don't want to hear it but it's a fact. My temps were opposite from yours, painted the "nose" @ 60 and ran the heat up to 80 before painting the body. It (clear)was not flowing out so I hammered the paint, rushed the second coat and there you go. I cooled the temp used slower catalyst and the jams did fine. I'm 2 days into re-paint prep and still a ways to go

Well...I was laughing at the paint, not you. It was just funny to see that someone else had the same issue I did, so I didn't feel so all alone. My paint did a similar thing with the flow out issue. In fact, the areas that had the solvent popping the worst had the thickest orange peel. Usually, when I have orange peel, I do not have any issues with paint as my problems in the past were all in areas where I got heavy runs that developed air bubbles inside. In fact, I sometimes spray my paint a bit light to avoid runs, knowing I can just sand out the orange peel later. This was also my first car done with Diamont as I used to use Deltron. Next time, I will probably go back to a high line PPG product instead of using Diamont again. I just had too many problems with it.

I only wish I could have afforded to repep and respray the car instead of having to live with it. Sadly, I couldn't though as I am a pizza delivery driver who only works 30 hours a week, and the tips have gone way down in this economy. Heck, I sacrificed having a phone to be able to afford to spray the car figuring I could just come up with the money in a week or two to have it turned back on. That was 7 weeks ago and I still have no phone.

I wuz just 😛 you. gotta laugh about it, bleeding fingers from all of the sanding is less funny all of the time :x ( it's not really that bad) I just NEED to get this thing enough together to move it!!!
