Orifice tube powdery crud?

The car was owned by a 93 year old man, who probably balked at the idea of recharging the expensive R-12 system way back when it first was banned. I remember them asking (and getting) $100 a can. So I'm thinking it was empty for a good 15 years or more?

OK. Replaced the accumulator, orifice tube, vacuumed it down, charged it with ES-12, and I'm getting 40* at the outlet on a humid 80* day. Not too shabby for a 28 year old car. The compressor I got from anthonychacon80 works fine. So far so good.

Hey Can I ask where the orfice tube is located on an 80 Camino? My a/c seem to hold freon but just didn't cool well at all. Please help..Tim

Re: Orifice tube location

IIRC, it is in the liquid line to the evaporator.

If you open the system, replace the F/D and pull a vacuum for at least 30 min, and it must hold a vacuum for at least an hour if you want it to hold a charge and work well.

I pull the vacuum 3 times for 30 minutes each time, with 30 minutes between pulls. I then let it sit a couple of hours and if it looks good, I charge it.

I hope to get a thermistor soon so I can see how mant microns I am pulling down to and look close for leaks and residual moisture.
