Might drive down to NM this summer and my car is loud. It doesn't have mufflers currently but will soon. Afaik m80 cherrybombs are 49 state legal.

Question: could I get a ticket for mods that for all intents and purposes are legal where the car is registered?

Yes you can. Doesn't matter where it is registered, matters where it is. Same with alcohol laws or firearm laws... Just because someone from Missouri can drink in the passenger seat while another drives doesn't mean they can do that in every state. Or just because you can legally have a loaded rifle in your vehicle in Kansas doesn't mean you can in Oregon. Etc.

Now the flip side to that is, shouldn't be an issue unless you are caught doing hooligan things, and/or how much of a jack wagon the officer wants to be that day. As long as there is nothing blatantly obvious to draw attention to your car, I wouldn't sweat it much.

Some towns might have they’re own laws about noise levels . In alot of places, police make better money by going to court when people fight a ticket. So they’re apt to write all they can. A good friend of mine was a small town cop, that’s how I know.

100%.if your cars a loud, shitbox looking ride, cherry bombs or not if Johnny law doesn't care for it in his town/County,you're on the side of the road..

It's all about profiling.

Things like noise level, tint, a lift, or tires sticking out past the fenders, they'll write.

Things like failure to display a front plant and the jurisdiction only issues rear plate... probably don't write.

And with an out of state tag they expect you to be gone and not show up for the hearing. That's instant money and raises the odds you get citations. 3mph over in a minimum fine zone? Write him up.

Also, if your car LOOKS like a POS, write him up - guy probably can't afford an attorney, probably loses more money off a day of work than the ticket, and likely has other things we can cite him for.

Ride looks ghetto - flip the lights. Maybe a weapons or controlled substance arrest as well.

Advice I give everyone- if your car looks a POS to an impartial 3rd party, just don't drive cross country. It's asking for trouble.

If you've got mods illegal elsewhere that are blatantly apparent, don't drive it cross country.

You just have to get to NM. There, you’ll blend right in. No state safety inspections. I’ve seen people drive for years in NM with spiderwebbed windshields. Harley Davidsons with basically straight pipes.

You’ll be on the interstates most of that time, just passin’ through. That said, 1600 miles with Cherry Bombs? You might not have much hearing when you get back.

Do you have catalytic converters? Even though they do not do emissions testing in Iowa, it is not legal with out them. You can get a fine for 10000 dollar and your car can be impounded for not having them. Never heard of anyone who has had that happen through. It is not the muffler that is legal or not. It is the decibel level. O ya, don't call me when you are stranded.

Put mufflers on the car, have current plates, inspection and insurance, and don't even sweat it...

NM isn't bad unless you make your self stand out. while your in NM though you can play NM bingo, points for awful drivers, cars with broken windows (side or windshield) ,wood in the road,D.I.Ds(d*ck in a Dodge) and shooter piles(99 gasoline and fireball). If something happens I'll help you out
