So I've had a radiator leak for a few days now, but it's been driving fine. Yesterday I had my upper radiator hose crack and I had to replace it. Today I filled up the radiator all the way, since I knew it'd leak. I was gone about 30min, and on my way back home, it started smoking black from under the hood. Almost stalled out too before I pulled over. When I popped the hood, I could see black smoke coming from the gaskets of the valve covers. I panicked and started driving again since home was only 3 miles away. I also started to hear a possible tapping noise, not like an exhaust leak (I have the a/c & heater box removed, so there's a gaping hole in the firewall, so i can hear every little sound at the moment). As soon as I get to the last light, I let off the gas and it immediately died. I couldn't crank it back it. I even waited thirty min and all I could hear was the starter barely working. My main question is, does this black smoke mean that damage could of possibly been done and I cooked the engine? Is it possible I could of cracked a head too? Only started smoking 2min before I stalled out in traffic.

Start by checking the oil. How does it look and smell? If it doesn't look like chocolate milk, the level looks ok and if it doesn't smell burned then that would be a good sign. Next check the transmission fluid. If the engine was hot then the transmission was hotter. Check the color and smell of the fluid. Let us know how those fluids look. Now that it has cooled down will the engine turn? If it won't then it's time to pull all the spark plugs and check for water in the cylinders. If your oil is chocolate milk or if there is water in any of the cylinders then it's time to pull the engine unless you are going to try to put a patch on it. Let us know.

Do your gauges or warning lights not working? Too bad you got rid of you heater, one thing a heater fan is good for it helps to cool down an engine. That tapping noise was preignition cause by the engine being extremely over heated.

Fixed the issue guys. I over panicked.... Replaced thermostat, and r and my bud soldered the seam of the radiator. Had a leak there, pressure tested it and affirmed all leaks were fixed. Flushed radiator, test drove it and it ran fine. Installing a water temp gauge on one of days off this week.

And I have had no choice, but to drive my Cutlass because I haven't had time to reinstall the transmission in my truck yet. Cutlass is supposed to be a project car.

I think he meant why didn't you let it sit for a while and cool down instead of panicking and driving it. Very possibly you will experience a head gasket failure or worse in the near future.

Yeah he should keep a close eye on things in the near future. I'd be checking the engine and oil after each trip. I'd do an oil change asap too and probably plan to redo all the gaskets soon.

That's the plan. Was going to do an oil change next week when I'm off work. Gaskets will be coming soon too. As well as installling a water temp gauge. Last owner used gasket maker rather than actual gaskets...smh. Looks sloppy as hell. I have to much OCD for that.
