I have an 87 cutlass supreme brougham and I want to know if I can just put the grill from the 86 on my car? And I wAnt to put a 350 in my car, what kind of transmission should I put in my car? I Was thinking either a 700 r, 350 turbo or 400 r. Please let me know what u think and why?

Look at the grilles and you'll have your answer. Completely different. ;)

As far as a trans, I would go with a TH-2004R over any of the others.

Your 350 won't likely ever need the strength of the TH-400, the TH-350 would be a better match but no overdrive. The TH-700 has too steep of a first gear and a slightly shorter overdrive compared to the TH-2004R.

I already have the 200 r in my cutlass and a 350 won't bolt up to it. And the 87 grill isn't much different than the 86 so I thought I could make it work. So do u think a 400 r would be a good match for a 350 engine because I'm getting it completely rebuilt with performance: pistons, cams, intake, carb. Pretty much the whole engine will be performance. I'm gonna make it about 400-450 hp. And what does a TH 400-r come out of?

2004r's should be universal gm bolt pattern, most anyway. This means a Chevy or Olds will work with it. What 350 do you want? Olds, Pontiac, Buick, Chevy? You will have to buy a trans with the proper bolt pattern. A th350 would be fine for 400hp if you only want 3 speeds. The 700r4 and 2004r would need a little bit of work to handle that if you were flogging the car a lot. I agree the 400 is overkill for 400 hp.

So I can put a 400 r in my cutlass with a chevy 350 engine. And how many horsepower is a 400r made for

As far as I know, a 400 r does not exist. If you're talking about a TH-400, that's a 3 speed auto. It's heavier duty and came in trucks and other heavy-duty applications. As far as how much horsepower it's made for, that's tough to answer. It all depends on what it came out of and the condition of it. Most of these transmissions mentioned can be built to handle pretty serious output, but the key word here is "built". I would not take an old, used transmission that has a bunch of miles on it and put it behind a bunch of horsepower and have high expectations. All I can say is, if you wanna play, you gotta pay....

Not every transmission has r after its designation. Your talking about a TH-400. You don't need a th-400 for a 400hp 350. It takes more power to spin a th-400 than a th-350. Might as well run a th-350 use less power to turn it and find them a whole lot easier. Not that th-400's are rare or anything. A stock th-350 with a shift kit will handle the power your looking to make. If you are stuck on getting a th-400 then you won't need anything either. A shift kit is always a good idea in my opinion but you won't need to tear it down and upgrade anything. As far as how much power it can handle, that really depends on how you drive it. If it lives at the strip then any transmission you buy should probably be upgraded for the abuse it will take. If your gonna street drive it and not beat it at the strip a whole lot than they can handle a lot of power.

EDIT: Got beat to the punch for some of the info.

As mentioned what brand 350 are we talking about here? I have a feeling I know....but still have to ask.

I didn't know the th400 was a 3 speed. I want a transmission with overdrive. So which kind of transmission should I use that will bolt to a chevy 350 and be strong enough to hold 400-500 horsepower

The 2004r or 700r4 both will need upgrades to handle that power reliably. The 2004r is probably your best bet.
