I have overdrive?????? And what do I have to do to it if I am gonna have 500 hp. And why would I want a 200 4r if I have to spend alot of money to be able to hold 500 hp. I could just get a 350 turbo

I dont know, do you have overdrive? Jesus, you said you wanted an overdrive transmission so I'm telling you a 2004r is your best bet but you will have to put some cash into it, or buy one built. A th350 is a sh*t ton stronger stock for stock. Your gonna have to do a little to any auto trans you use. There werent any 500hp cars from the factory using those transmission that I am aware of so all of them will need a little work. Are you really gonna have 500hp? I would start there honestly. 500hp is gonna cost you a decent chunk of change, might as well put some cash into the transmission as well.

i would get a 2004r . to get ont to handel 500 hp your looking at $1600-2000 to by one. been looking to get one my self the th350 is not doing well with 3.89 gears in it.

just google 2004r you will find lots of companys saying they build the best ones just have to choose one

I ran a TCI TH2004R in my cars for years without any trouble...CK Performance also gets my vote, although there are many other reputable companies doing 2004R's as well

Don't forget the $$$$ high stall converter that would be a MUST for a 500 hp small block to get up to an RPM where it makes power.

Either way IMO, I don't think a 500 hp small block is going to be a very steetable car especially without OD. It's going to have alot of lope, have to have the idle set high just so it won't stall, get horrible gas milage, require octane booter ( maybe ), and not make any power in the RPM range required in a street car. Skimp on the coverter and part throttle driving will be even worse. That sounds like a race car to me.

What are your ET / MPH goals for this car anyway? Maybe you don't even need 500 hp? I know people who've said they wanted 'bazillion' hp engines thinking that's what they needed to reach their goals only to find out they could accomplish those goals with much less.

There are plenty of cars driving the streets that have 500 horsepower and that get decent gas milage. But anyways I don't have a set goal on time or mph. I jus wanna have a fast *ss car. I want it to do atleast 150. I might even make it a tune port engine. So if I have overdrive in my car, does that mean I have a th200r4? I asked this above and no one answered it

I know there are plenty of hot cars out there. What I was trying to tell you was that your gonna have to mod the trans. GM didnt put 500hp engines factory in front of 2004r's or most of their transmissions for that matter so your gonna have to mod any trans you use for that power. Most likely you have a 2004r if you have a 4 speed automatic.

I'm sorry, but I'm just going to come out and say what I think everyone else here is afraid to say; you need to learn what the heck you're doing before undertaking a project like you're looking to do. Do you have ANY clue what it takes to build a reliable 500 hp small block and the rest of the car to handle it safely? You couldn't even determine if you had an OD transmission or not which requires one to simply look at the gear shift indicator, but you're going to build a streetable carbed 500 hp small block, build a strong transmission, build a strong rear end, do the proper susspension work, paint the car, AND swap the interior for a different color? You will never accomplish your goal unless you have tons of cash and an experienced guy doing the work for you ( or helping you ).

And one doesn't usually build a car with nothing but a top speed goal. You think you're going to be happy with a 'fast *ss car' that gos 150 but takes you forever to complete the 1/4 mile? It's hard to judge what exactly you're looking to acheive with nothing more than 'fast *ss' and a top speed to go off of. Who knows, maybe you think 13's is 'fast *ss'? We don't really know.

I don't care if you think I'm a dick for telling you how it is, but I posted it in hopes it will shock you into reality. If you insist on going ahead with this project, I think you're going to be deeply disappointed and out alot of money too, not to mention I don't think you'd ever even complete it. PLEASE set a realistic goal for your mechanical apptitude level and budget, and go from there. And get a good paying job too, because you're going to need lots of money.

He added up all the advertisers horsepower gains and came up 500HP? The dyno or track mph would probably indicate 300HP. Art Carr is REAL PROUD of his transmissions and prices accordingly but has good stuff. Local transmission shops usually fail when they try building a stout 200-4R which is why you find a shop that has a track record of building good high performance 200-4Rs. http://www.CKPerformance.com also has an outstanding reputation. I used one of his quality shift kits for years and was very pleased with it.

I had two 200-4Rs built by Lonnie at http://www.extremeautomatics.com and had great luck with both of them. One behind my GN and one behind the 509ci Caddy in my 442. Torque usually breaks transmissions not horsepower. When you get to 500 foot pounds of torque with a 200-4R you should upgrade to the billet forward drum/shaft. Both times I had my stock "D5" lock up torque converter built up furnace brazed anti ballooning etc to 2,800 and 3,000 stall for $300. For a little chevy 350 Lonnie's stage 1 would be fine. Guaranteed 1 year to 500HP or 10.9 et. Cost $1,395 add $300 for a converter build.

IMO three speeds are for bare budget or drag cars or something that doesn't leave town. Technology & aftermarket left them behind.

Edit: Double V was spot on. I don't want to discourage you from your ideas of building a hot street car but its going to take some self education like you can find on these forums learning from others and a lot of help by someone who has been turning wrenches and fixing cars for years. Once upon a time most of us were where you are and were all still learning as technology and the aftermarket continually change whats possible and practical.
