posi not working

It's most likely an Auburn with the cones which is not rebuildable

Are you saying GM used Auburn posi's from the factory? I have always thought the Auburn's were aftermarket only as I've never seen in in a stock rear.

OP,
you can get clutch kits to rebuild Eaton posi relatively cheap if you're willing to wait for online purchases from alot of online sources. Before buying much of anything though, you ought to get it apart and check your spider gears, side gears and bearings if you're really concerned about making sure it last as long as possible.

I have had the opposite experience with G bodies, I have never seen an Eaton posi in a G body from factory. Also the rear end from an 87 SS would have a 7 5/8 carrier in it and by this application chart Eaton did not offer the 7 5/8 carrier in the G body years.

G-bodies don't have Eaton rear carriers, but they are not Auburns.

The G-body 8.5's are all clutch plate style (like an Eaton) and not cone style. They just are spindly when compared to an Eaton aftermarket positraction.

Auburns are really "Borg Warners".

I had 3 G bodies and they all had Auburn posi
Since this is a topic of discussion...i have a question.
I will be rebuilding the 8.5" in my cutlass next year since i have some popping and nasty noises coming from when i drove on a bent axle when i first got the rearend. I plan on putting all new guts in it.
Most likely some moser 28 or 30 spline axles, new richmond 3.73 that i have waiting, and new install kit obviously.
Back to the question, would an Auburn posi be better than the Eaton???? Both are priced about the same, this is just an area i lack some knowledge on.
Any advice is appreciated!

I like the Eaton better since you can change the clutch packs and you can get different clutch packs made with different materials and springs with higher pressures...

Mine is a 7.625, not a 8.5, I wish It was though.
I honestly got kinda lucky when i got mine. My cutlass had the 7.5", but when i had little knowledge of my car prolly 12-13 years ago i ordered a powertrax unit and new gears for a 8.5":blam:!!!! The shop called me and recommended either return the parts, or they could swap to a 8.5" they had sitting that was pulled from an H/O with 3.73's already in it. So the rearend only cost me $275 (keep in mind that was 2003-04ish) prices!!! However, unknown to the shop and myself the driver side axle was bent and i had no choice to drive it for a couple days(it was my daily) until i got a replacement axle. The damage was done and it's popped and made weird clicking noises since!
With the resto getting done i can't justify rolling out a "new" cutlass with a jacked up rearend lol, hence the inquiries on which brand of carrier is better.

I put a new 28 spline Eaton with Moser Axles. 30 spline is stronger, but 28 spline Mosers is strong enough for high 10's and aftermarket Eatons are much beefier than the OEM Eaton-type posi.

I had a Auburn in my '89 5.0 and a Borg Warner in my TTA. I got a flat on my 5.0,70 miles from my house and my space saver spare wouldn't fit my big brakes in front, so it had to go in back. The tire height difference for 70 miles killed the Auburn. I will never put a smaller diameter spare on the back of my TTA because of this.

We all know that.

Nobody can help you until you put a pan under it and take the back cover off. If you have an auburn, there are junkyard options from later cars, like a torsen, but until you pop the cover off its all speculation.

We were just keeping the thread up top discussing trivia and loosely related subjects, waiting to hear back from you.
