Not sure if it was mentioned previously - posi, G80 is an option, not every SS had factory posi.

I like the Eaton better since you can change the clutch packs and you can get different clutch packs made with different materials and springs with higher pressures...
Sweet, thanks! I was hoping that was gonna be the response. No offense to auburn, but my dad swears by eaton diffs. Him being a veteran diesel mechanic for over 4 decades i trust his judgement, usually that is considering the diffs he works with are as big as our factory wheels lol!

I wouldn't call myself an expert on rear diffs so I didn't chime in until now. I can tell you that we put a new Eaton posi in my brother's Z28. The new units have carbon fiber clutches that should last much better than the old school fiber clutches. If I ever replace the govlock in my 08 Sierra, it will be with an Eaton Posi.

how could a salesman let a customer walk in, order a Monte Carlo SS and not talk him into a posi for the performance vehicle. .....

A lot of those idiot salesmen ordered 355 lb feet of torque turbo Regals without positractions. It wasn't until late in 1987 that they became a mandatory option and cut dealer stupidity out of the ordering process.

I guess we have to cut them some slack. They were Buick dealers, after all. Their average buyer's age was 60.

Well, 2 out of 3 SS's that I checked had an open diff. C'mon, does 180 HP justify the need for posi? (LOL)

Since this is a topic of discussion...i have a question.
I will be rebuilding the 8.5" in my cutlass next year since i have some popping and nasty noises coming from when i drove on a bent axle when i first got the rearend. I plan on putting all new guts in it.
Most likely some moser 28 or 30 spline axles, new richmond 3.73 that i have waiting, and new install kit obviously.
Back to the question, would an Auburn posi be better than the Eaton???? Both are priced about the same, this is just an area i lack some knowledge on.
Any advice is appreciated!

Rebuilding the posi and new axles will is going to run in the $500+ range. You can buy a new one from Quicks with axles and bearings for around $700ish. And at that point you can grab an 8.6 31 spline posi unit (direct replacement for newer full size truck) and axles for the same price.

I do agree with UNGN that a set of Moser 28 spline axles will with withstand a 10 second car, but my opinion is if you're going to upgrade, then why not get the best bang for your buck. Especially considering you're planning to add some boost in the future.

And FWIW, I thought all of the factory clutch sty;e 7.5's and 8.5's were Eatons made for GM. I've used Eaton clutches in a GM unit???? And I've never seen an Auburn as original equipment - I guess I earn something new everyday.

Thanks for the heads up on getting the stuff from quicks! Always thought about swapping to a 9", but with the 8.5's getting harder to find I'd rather rebuild it and keep it under the car....keeps it GM too.
I definitely want boost eventually so might as well do it right this time around.

It's all about perception, so if a guy wants to buy a fast looking car you'd think a salesman would like to pad his income a bit by selling the customer some performance upgrades. After all the SS came with 3.83 gears to give an false sense of increased power.

This is my experience, too from way back when. Even the S shaped spring clip (that Eaton doesn't use anymore) is an Eaton clip. And if they cars did have factory "auburn style" posi-traction units in them, they called them Borg Warner posi-tractions.
